Impact of Career-Diversification Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Multiple Income Skills

Abstract

Career-Diversification Education can play an important role in helping adults recognize different skills that may be developed and applied across multiple income-generating activities. Changes in employment patterns have increased the importance of transferable and adaptable skills that allow individuals to explore more than one economic opportunity. However, some adults may have difficulty identifying the skills they already possess or determining how such skills can be applied to different income-generating activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Career-Diversification Education on adults’ ability to identify multiple income skills and determine whether educational exposure can improve their recognition of skills that may support diverse economic activities. Career-Diversification Education introduces adults to concepts and practices associated with developing and applying different skills across various work and income opportunities. Learning activities may expose participants to skill identification, transferable competencies, vocational abilities, digital skills, communication skills, creative abilities, problem-solving skills, and other competencies that can be applied in different contexts. Through practical exercises and guided discussions, adults can examine their existing abilities, identify areas of competence, and understand how individual skills may be relevant to different employment, self-employment, freelance, or service opportunities. Adults’ ability to identify multiple income skills refers to their capacity to recognize the different abilities they possess that can potentially be applied to more than one income-generating activity. This includes identifying transferable, technical, interpersonal, creative, entrepreneurial, and digital skills and relating them to appropriate opportunities. A stronger ability to identify such skills can help adults understand the economic value of their existing competencies and recognize possibilities for developing additional skills. Career-Diversification Education can strengthen this ability by providing structured opportunities for self-assessment, skills mapping, career exploration, and practical examination of different applications of individual competencies. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate skills-identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify multiple income skills. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Career-Diversification Education on adults’ ability to identify multiple income skills. The study is expected to establish that Career-Diversification Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify multiple income skills. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater ability to recognize transferable competencies, connect their existing skills with different income opportunities, and identify areas where additional skills may be required. The study may further establish that practical skills-assessment activities help adults develop a broader understanding of their capabilities and their potential application across different economic activities. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, and facilitators. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical skills-mapping exercises, self-assessment activities, career exploration tasks, and discussions that enable adults to examine the different ways their abilities can be applied. Facilitators can also encourage learners to identify transferable skills and consider how combinations of different competencies may support participation in diverse income-generating activities. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to changing employment conditions and the need for adaptable skills. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, career development organisations, employment-support organisations, and programme developers by providing insight into how education can improve adults’ recognition of diverse income-related skills. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide structured opportunities for adults to assess their competencies, identify transferable skills, and explore different applications of their abilities. The study concludes that Career-Diversification Education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify multiple income skills and support more informed decisions concerning skill development and diverse economic opportunities.
