Impact of Career Planning Education on Adults’ Career Goal Setting

Abstract

Career Planning Education refers to structured learning experiences that provide adults with knowledge and skills for understanding career options, assessing career interests, identifying occupational requirements, and establishing realistic career directions. Career goal setting involves the ability to formulate clear and achievable objectives relating to occupational development, employment, skills acquisition, or professional advancement. Effective career goal setting is important because it provides adults with direction and helps them make purposeful decisions about their future work and learning. However, some adults may experience difficulties in identifying realistic career objectives and organizing their aspirations into clear goals. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Career Planning Education on adults’ career goal setting. Career Planning Education introduces adults to processes involved in career exploration, self-assessment, occupational information, skills identification, career decision-making, and goal formulation. Through discussions, career information activities, practical exercises, case studies, and guided planning tasks, adults can examine their interests, abilities, experiences, and available career options. These learning experiences can also help adults understand the importance of establishing realistic career targets and identifying appropriate steps for progressing toward their chosen career directions. Adults’ career goal setting refers to their ability to establish clear, realistic, and achievable objectives related to their occupational and professional development. It involves identifying desired career outcomes, determining priorities, establishing targets, and defining practical directions for achieving those targets. Adults who can set appropriate career goals are better positioned to organize their learning, skills development, and employment-related activities toward clearly defined outcomes. Career Planning Education can therefore provide the knowledge and practical experiences required to strengthen adults’ ability to establish meaningful career goals. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education, vocational, and continuing learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess participants’ exposure to Career Planning Education and their career goal-setting abilities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Career Planning Education has a positive impact on adults’ career goal setting. Adults exposed to relevant career-planning education are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify career priorities, formulate realistic occupational goals, establish clear targets, and organize their career aspirations into achievable objectives. The study may further indicate that practical career-planning activities help adults develop greater clarity and confidence when determining their career directions. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical career-planning and goal-setting activities into relevant adult learning programmes. Career exploration exercises, self-assessment activities, occupational information sessions, goal-formulation tasks, and individual career-planning exercises can help adults develop practical skills for setting career goals. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to adults’ employment and professional development needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, career guidance practitioners, vocational training providers, educational institutions, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may acquire improved skills for establishing realistic career objectives and organizing their developmental activities. Adult educators and career guidance practitioners may gain useful information for designing career-related learning activities, while vocational and educational institutions may use the findings to strengthen career-planning support provided to adult learners. The study recommends that Career Planning Education should include practical activities that enable adults to identify career interests, examine occupational information, establish realistic career goals, and determine appropriate steps toward achieving them. Adult educators should use self-assessment, career exploration, case studies, guided planning exercises, and goal-setting activities to strengthen learners’ career-planning abilities. The study concludes that Career Planning Education can improve adults’ career goal setting and support more purposeful decisions concerning occupational and professional development.
