Impact of Communication Education on Adults’ Ability to Summarize Information Orally
Abstract
Communication education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills that can improve their ability to understand, organize, and convey information effectively in different situations. The ability to summarize information orally refers to the capacity to identify the main ideas in a message or body of information and communicate them accurately and briefly through spoken language. However, some adults may find it difficult to distinguish important information from less relevant details when providing verbal summaries. This study will examine the impact of communication education on adults’ ability to summarize information orally. Communication education can provide learning experiences through discussions, oral presentations, listening exercises, group activities, demonstrations, and guided summarization tasks. These activities can help adults develop skills in identifying key points, arranging ideas logically, eliminating unnecessary details, and expressing essential information in their own words. Repeated oral practice can also help learners improve their confidence, clarity, accuracy, and ability to maintain the central meaning of information while presenting a shorter version. The ability to summarize information orally involves listening to or reviewing information, identifying its central ideas, selecting relevant supporting details, organizing the selected points, and communicating them clearly in spoken form. Effective oral summarization requires adequate comprehension, attention to important information, appropriate vocabulary, logical organization, and concise verbal expression. This ability is useful in educational, workplace, community, and everyday communication situations where adults may need to communicate lengthy information within a limited period. Communication education may therefore strengthen this ability by providing structured opportunities for listening, analysis, practice, and feedback. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, communication-skills, and continuing learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate oral communication assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to summarize information orally. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of communication education on adults’ ability to summarize information orally. The study is expected to establish that communication education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to summarize information orally. Adults exposed to structured communication learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify main ideas, select relevant details, organize information, and communicate concise oral summaries without losing the essential meaning of the original information. The study is also expected to indicate that guided listening exercises, oral summarization activities, presentations, and constructive feedback can contribute to improved summarization performance. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, communication educators, facilitators, workplace trainers, and programme developers. Communication education programmes should incorporate regular oral summarization activities that require adults to listen to, interpret, condense, and communicate information in their own words. Facilitators should provide constructive feedback on accuracy, relevance, organization, clarity, and conciseness to help learners progressively improve their oral summarization abilities. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, employees, community participants, and organizations that depend on effective oral communication. It will recommend that communication education programmes provide practical learning activities that develop adults’ ability to process and communicate essential information concisely. The study will conclude that appropriately structured communication education can improve adults’ oral summarization abilities and enhance their effectiveness in communicating important information across educational, professional, and everyday settings.
