Impact of Community Needs-Assessment Training on Adults’ Data-Gathering Skills
Abstract
Community Needs-Assessment Training refers to structured learning that equips adults with knowledge and practical skills for identifying, collecting, and organizing information about the needs and priorities of a community. Data-gathering skills involve the ability to obtain relevant and accurate information through appropriate methods such as interviews, observations, questionnaires, and community discussions. These skills are important because reliable community information provides a basis for identifying problems, setting priorities, and planning appropriate interventions. However, inadequate knowledge of data-gathering procedures may affect the quality of information collected during community needs assessments. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Community Needs-Assessment Training on adults’ data-gathering skills. Community Needs-Assessment Training exposes adults to important procedures involved in gathering information from individuals, households, groups, and community institutions. Through practical demonstrations, role-playing, field exercises, group discussions, and case studies, adults can learn how to identify information needs, select appropriate data sources, formulate relevant questions, conduct interviews, administer questionnaires, and record responses accurately. The training can also introduce adults to ethical practices such as obtaining informed participation, maintaining confidentiality, and treating respondents respectfully during data collection. Adults’ data-gathering skills refer to their ability to systematically obtain, record, organize, and verify information needed for understanding community conditions and priorities. Effective data gathering requires appropriate selection of information sources, accurate questioning, attentive listening, careful observation, proper recording, and avoidance of unnecessary bias. Adults with strong data-gathering skills can obtain more useful information for community planning and decision-making. Community Needs-Assessment Training can therefore provide the practical knowledge and experience required to strengthen these skills. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community-based training programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess participants’ exposure to Community Needs-Assessment Training and their data-gathering skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Community Needs-Assessment Training has a positive impact on adults’ data-gathering skills. Adults who receive relevant training are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in selecting appropriate information sources, asking relevant questions, recording responses, conducting basic interviews, administering data-collection instruments, and organizing gathered information. The study may further indicate that practical field-based learning provides adults with greater confidence and competence in collecting information for community needs assessment. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to place greater emphasis on practical data-gathering activities rather than relying mainly on theoretical instruction. Field exercises, simulated interviews, questionnaire administration, observation activities, and community-based assignments can provide adults with opportunities to practise data-collection procedures. Such approaches can make needs-assessment training more practical and prepare learners to gather useful information in real community settings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development organizations, community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, project committees, and programme administrators. Adult learners may acquire practical skills that can improve their participation in community assessments and development activities. Community organizations may benefit from individuals who can gather reliable information about community needs, while adult educators may gain useful insights for improving training programmes. Programme administrators may also use the findings to strengthen practical components of community development education. The study recommends that Community Needs-Assessment Training should incorporate practical exercises that enable adults to develop and demonstrate effective data-gathering skills. Adult educators should use fieldwork, role-playing, interviews, questionnaire exercises, observation tasks, and community-based projects to strengthen learners’ practical competence. Adequate attention should also be given to accuracy, ethical conduct, respectful communication, and proper recording of information. The study concludes that Community Needs-Assessment Training can contribute to improving adults’ data-gathering skills and enhance their capacity to provide useful information for community planning and development.
