Impact of Continuous Assessment on Learning Engagement among Adult Learners

Abstract

Continuous assessment refers to the systematic evaluation of learners’ knowledge, skills, and progress at different stages of an educational programme, while learning engagement refers to the extent to which adult learners actively participate in, concentrate on, and remain involved in learning activities. Continuous assessment is important in adult education because regular evaluation can provide learners with feedback on their progress and encourage consistent attention to learning tasks. However, assessment practices that are irregular, poorly structured, or disconnected from learning activities may affect the level of engagement among adult learners. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of continuous assessment on learning engagement among adult learners. Continuous assessment involves the regular use of quizzes, assignments, class exercises, projects, presentations, practical tasks, and other forms of assessment throughout the learning process. It provides opportunities for educators to monitor learners’ progress and identify areas that require further attention. For adult learners, regular assessment can encourage consistent study habits, provide opportunities to demonstrate understanding, and offer timely feedback on academic performance. The use of appropriate continuous assessment activities can therefore make the learning process more active and provide learners with regular opportunities to interact with educational content. Learning engagement among adult learners refers to their active involvement, attention, interest, effort, and participation in educational activities. Engaged learners are more likely to attend learning sessions, contribute to discussions, complete assigned tasks, interact with learning materials, and remain focused on educational objectives. Continuous assessment may influence learning engagement by encouraging learners to remain attentive to learning activities and providing regular feedback on their progress. Frequent opportunities to demonstrate learning can also encourage adults to take greater responsibility for their educational activities. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on continuous assessment practices and learning engagement among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of continuous assessment on learning engagement among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that continuous assessment has a significant impact on learning engagement among adult learners. Adult learners who are regularly assessed through appropriate learning activities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of attention, participation, effort, task completion, and involvement in educational activities. The findings may also indicate that regular feedback and opportunities to demonstrate learning encourage adults to maintain consistent engagement with their educational programmes. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by emphasizing the importance of using continuous assessment as part of the learning process rather than relying solely on final examinations. Adult educators can use appropriately designed quizzes, assignments, practical activities, projects, and classroom exercises to encourage regular learner involvement. Timely and constructive feedback can also help adult learners understand their progress and identify areas requiring improvement, thereby supporting continued engagement with learning activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, adult education institutions, curriculum developers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from regular opportunities to monitor their progress and remain actively involved in learning, while adult educators may gain useful information for improving assessment practices. Programme administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to develop assessment policies that encourage meaningful engagement among adult learners. The study will recommend that adult education institutions should incorporate appropriate continuous assessment activities into their instructional programmes. Adult educators should use varied assessment techniques that are relevant to learning objectives and provide timely, constructive feedback to learners. Assessment activities should be manageable and clearly connected to learning content to encourage sustained engagement. The study concludes that effective continuous assessment can enhance learning engagement among adult learners by promoting regular interaction with learning activities, providing feedback, and encouraging consistent academic effort.
