Impact of Cultural Education on Adults’ Documentation of Local Folklore
Abstract
Cultural education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge about the traditions, stories, beliefs, values, and creative expressions that characterize their communities. Local folklore refers to traditional stories, legends, proverbs, songs, myths, oral narratives, and other forms of community-based cultural expression transmitted across generations. The decline in the documentation of local folklore may contribute to the loss of valuable cultural information and reduce opportunities for future generations to access community narratives. The study therefore aims to examine the impact of cultural education on adults’ documentation of local folklore. Cultural education exposes adults to the historical, social, and cultural significance of local folklore through storytelling, oral history, cultural discussions, practical activities, community-based learning, and interaction with cultural knowledge holders. These learning experiences can help adults identify different forms of folklore and understand appropriate methods of recording, organizing, preserving, and transmitting them. By connecting learning with community experiences, cultural education can encourage adults to view local folklore as a valuable source of cultural knowledge worthy of systematic documentation. Documentation of local folklore involves recording, organizing, describing, and preserving traditional stories and other forms of oral and cultural expression for future reference. Adults who possess relevant knowledge and skills may be better able to collect oral narratives, record traditional songs and proverbs, document community stories, and organize cultural materials in accessible forms. Cultural education can influence this ability by providing adults with knowledge of documentation methods and encouraging them to recognize the importance of preserving local folklore. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected cultural education or adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to cultural education and adults’ documentation of local folklore. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that cultural education has a positive impact on adults’ documentation of local folklore. Adults exposed to relevant cultural education are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of methods for recording and organizing local stories, proverbs, songs, legends, and other forms of folklore. The study is also expected to indicate that educational exposure can increase adults’ awareness of the value of documenting cultural expressions and encourage greater effort toward preserving local folklore for future use. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical cultural documentation activities. Adult educators may use storytelling sessions, oral history projects, interviews with community knowledge holders, field activities, and documentation exercises to help learners develop practical knowledge of recording local folklore. Such approaches can make cultural education more experiential and provide adults with opportunities to contribute directly to the preservation of community-based cultural expressions. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, cultural knowledge holders, community organizations, cultural institutions, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may develop greater knowledge and skills for documenting local folklore, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing culturally relevant learning activities. Cultural knowledge holders may benefit from increased opportunities for their knowledge to be recorded and preserved, while cultural organizations and institutions may use the findings to strengthen folklore documentation initiatives. Programme planners may also incorporate practical cultural documentation activities into relevant adult education programmes. The study recommends that cultural education programmes should provide adults with practical opportunities to learn and participate in the documentation of local folklore. Adult educators should employ storytelling, interviews, oral history projects, fieldwork, and community-based documentation activities to develop learners’ practical skills. Documentation activities should respect the ownership, consent, privacy, and cultural significance of community knowledge and should ensure that recorded materials are accurately preserved. It is concluded that cultural education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ documentation of local folklore and supporting the preservation of valuable community-based cultural expressions.
