Impact of Emergency Preparedness Education on Adults’ Emergency Communication Skills
Abstract
Emergency preparedness education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills needed to communicate effectively before, during, and after emergency situations. Emergency communication skills refer to the ability to convey important information clearly, receive and understand emergency messages, report relevant situations, and communicate instructions appropriately during times of danger or disruption. Effective communication is important because timely and accurate information can support coordination and appropriate responses during emergencies. However, inadequate communication skills may create confusion and hinder the effective sharing of important emergency information. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of emergency preparedness education on adults’ emergency communication skills. Emergency preparedness education can develop adults’ communication skills through structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, role-play activities, simulations, and practical emergency scenarios. Learning activities may expose adults to appropriate methods of reporting emergencies, communicating essential information, listening to emergency instructions, sharing warnings, and maintaining clarity when communicating under stressful circumstances. Repeated practice can help learners understand the importance of accuracy, brevity, and appropriate communication when conveying emergency-related information. Emergency communication skills enable adults to exchange information effectively during situations that require urgent attention. Adults with appropriate communication skills may be better able to report incidents, communicate their location and relevant circumstances, understand instructions, relay warnings, and share important information with household or community members. Emergency preparedness education may therefore improve these skills by providing adults with practical communication knowledge and opportunities to practise responding to realistic emergency situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an emergency communication skills assessment based on selected emergency communication situations. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of emergency preparedness education on adults’ emergency communication skills. The study is expected to establish that emergency preparedness education has a positive impact on adults’ emergency communication skills. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to communicate essential information, report emergency situations, understand emergency messages, relay warnings, and follow communication instructions. The study may also reveal greater confidence among adults when communicating during situations that require urgent information exchange. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical emergency skills in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to incorporate role-play, simulations, communication drills, discussions, and realistic emergency scenarios into preparedness lessons. Such practical activities can provide adults with opportunities to practise communicating under different emergency conditions and strengthen their ability to apply communication skills outside the classroom. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, disaster-management educators, emergency-response organizations, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop stronger emergency communication skills, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical communication during emergencies. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen emergency communication components within adult education and preparedness programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical emergency preparedness education that emphasizes effective emergency communication. Adult educators should use simulations, role-play activities, realistic scenarios, demonstrations, and communication exercises to strengthen learners’ ability to exchange emergency information accurately and appropriately. It is concluded that effective emergency preparedness education can improve adults’ emergency communication skills and support clearer, faster, and more organized communication during emergency situations.
