Impact of Employment Information Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Job Requirements

Abstract

Employment information education provides adults with relevant knowledge about available employment opportunities, workplace expectations, qualifications, skills, and conditions associated with different jobs, while the ability to identify job requirements refers to adults’ capacity to recognize and understand the qualifications, competencies, experience, and other conditions needed for specific employment opportunities. In an increasingly competitive labour market, adults need accurate employment information to determine whether they meet the requirements of available jobs and identify areas where additional training may be necessary. However, inadequate access to reliable employment information may make it difficult for adults to interpret job requirements effectively. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of employment information education on adults’ ability to identify job requirements. Employment information education exposes adults to information about job opportunities, educational qualifications, technical and transferable skills, work experience, professional certifications, application procedures, and employer expectations. Through employment information sessions, career guidance, job-information resources, and practical interpretation of job advertisements, adults can learn how to locate relevant employment information and distinguish essential requirements from preferred qualifications. Such education can improve adults’ understanding of what employers seek and enable them to make more informed assessments of employment opportunities. The ability to identify job requirements involves recognizing the specific qualifications, skills, experience, certifications, personal competencies, and other conditions stated or implied in a job opportunity. Adults who can accurately identify these requirements are better positioned to determine their suitability for particular positions and recognize skills or qualifications they may need to acquire. Employment information education can therefore contribute to improved interpretation of job descriptions and more informed employment-related decisions. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire developed to measure exposure to employment information education and adults’ ability to identify job requirements. The collected data will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that employment information education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify job requirements. Adults who receive relevant employment information education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize educational qualifications, technical skills, work experience, certifications, and other conditions required for different employment opportunities. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning by encouraging the integration of practical employment information into adult learning programmes. Adult educators can use real job advertisements, career information resources, application examples, and employment-related activities to help learners develop practical skills for interpreting job requirements. This approach can make adult education more responsive to changing labour-market needs. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, employment support organisations, career guidance practitioners, policymakers, and employers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to assess employment opportunities, while educators may gain useful information for developing employment-oriented learning activities. Employment support organisations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen employment information services and career education initiatives for adults. The study will recommend that adult education programmes provide regular and accessible employment information education, incorporate practical exercises on interpreting job advertisements, and expose adults to current information about qualifications and skills demanded in different occupations. Adult educators should also encourage learners to compare their existing competencies with stated job requirements and identify areas for further development. The study will conclude that effective employment information education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify job requirements and support more informed employment decisions.
