Impact of Financial Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Simple Financial Choices
Abstract
Financial education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills for making informed decisions about money and everyday financial activities. The ability to evaluate simple financial choices involves comparing available alternatives, considering costs and benefits, understanding basic financial consequences, and selecting an option based on relevant information. Limited financial knowledge may make it difficult for adults to assess everyday choices such as saving, spending, borrowing, or purchasing decisions. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of financial education on adults’ ability to evaluate simple financial choices. Financial education can expose adults to basic concepts such as income, expenditure, saving, borrowing, interest, prices, and financial priorities. Through lessons, practical exercises, discussions, examples, and financial decision-making scenarios, learners can develop skills for comparing simple financial alternatives. These educational activities can help adults understand the consequences associated with different choices and apply basic financial knowledge to everyday situations. Adults’ ability to evaluate simple financial choices involves identifying available alternatives, comparing relevant financial information, considering potential outcomes, and determining the most appropriate option. Financial education can strengthen these abilities by providing adults with opportunities to analyse realistic financial situations and practise making informed comparisons. Improved evaluation skills may enable adults to approach everyday financial decisions with greater understanding and accuracy. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to financial education and adults’ ability to evaluate simple financial choices. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that financial education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to evaluate simple financial choices. Adults exposed to relevant financial education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to compare financial alternatives, identify costs and benefits, and recognize the likely consequences of different choices. The findings may also indicate that practical financial scenarios and problem-solving exercises can strengthen adults’ ability to apply financial knowledge to everyday decisions. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of financial literacy within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to emphasize practical decision-making activities rather than relying mainly on theoretical explanations. Case scenarios, guided comparisons, budgeting examples, and simple financial problems can help learners connect financial concepts with real-life situations and develop stronger decision-making skills. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, households, community learning centres, financial literacy providers, and organisations involved in adult development. Adults may become more confident in assessing everyday financial alternatives, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical financial decision-making. Households may also benefit when adults apply improved evaluation skills to routine spending, saving, and other financial choices. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical financial education focused on evaluating everyday financial choices. Adult educators should use realistic scenarios, guided comparisons, discussions, and problem-solving exercises to strengthen learners’ financial decision-making abilities. Relevant organisations should also support accessible financial literacy programmes for adults. The study concludes that financial education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to evaluate simple financial choices when instruction is practical, clear, and relevant to everyday financial experiences.
