Impact of Fire Safety Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Household Fire Prevention
Abstract
Fire safety education is an important component of adult learning that can equip individuals with the knowledge required to identify household fire hazards and adopt appropriate preventive measures. Household fires may result from unsafe cooking practices, electrical faults, improper storage of flammable materials, unattended heat sources, and other avoidable hazards. Inadequate knowledge of these risks can increase the likelihood of fire incidents and reduce adults’ ability to prevent them effectively. This study will examine the impact of fire safety education on adults’ knowledge of household fire prevention, with the purpose of determining whether appropriate safety education can improve adults’ understanding of fire hazards and preventive practices within the home. Fire safety education involves structured learning activities designed to provide individuals with information about fire hazards, prevention strategies, safe household practices, and appropriate responses to potential fire emergencies. Such education may include safety demonstrations, community workshops, instructional materials, discussions, practical exercises, and awareness campaigns. Through these activities, adults can learn how to identify potential sources of household fires, use electrical and cooking appliances safely, store combustible materials appropriately, maintain basic safety equipment, and respond to warning signs. Practical and participatory learning approaches can make fire prevention information easier for adults to understand and apply. Adults’ knowledge of household fire prevention refers to their ability to identify common household fire risks and explain the appropriate measures for reducing or eliminating those risks. This knowledge includes awareness of electrical safety, cooking safety, safe use of heating devices, proper storage of flammable substances, safe handling of candles and other ignition sources, and the importance of maintaining clear escape routes. Fire safety education can improve this knowledge by providing adults with accurate information and practical examples of preventive behaviour. Better knowledge may enable adults to recognize hazards earlier and make safer decisions within their households. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected community education and fire safety programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of household fire prevention practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of fire safety education on adults’ knowledge of household fire prevention. The study is expected to establish that fire safety education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of household fire prevention. Adults exposed to structured fire safety education are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of common household fire hazards, preventive measures, electrical and cooking safety, proper storage practices, and the importance of maintaining safe household environments. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and locally relevant safety examples can strengthen adults’ ability to recognize and prevent potentially dangerous situations. The findings will have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, fire safety educators, community leaders, and organizations involved in household safety promotion. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical fire prevention activities, demonstrations, safety discussions, and periodic awareness sessions to strengthen adults’ knowledge. Educators can also use simple and accessible instructional materials that relate fire prevention principles to common household activities. Such approaches can encourage adults to apply acquired knowledge to everyday household practices and promote greater awareness of preventable fire risks. The study will be significant to adults, households, community organizations, safety educators, and emergency preparedness stakeholders by providing useful information on the role of fire safety education in strengthening household fire prevention knowledge. It will recommend increased integration of practical fire prevention education into relevant adult learning and community safety programmes, with emphasis on hazard identification and safe everyday practices. The study will conclude that effective fire safety education can improve adults’ knowledge of household fire prevention and contribute to safer household environments through better awareness and preventive decision-making.
