Impact of Informal Learning Opportunities on Educational Engagement among Community Adults
Abstract
Informal learning opportunities refer to learning experiences that occur outside structured educational institutions and may arise through everyday activities, social interactions, workplace experiences, community activities, observation, reading, and practical problem-solving. Educational engagement among community adults refers to the extent to which adults show interest, attention, involvement, commitment, and active participation in learning activities. Access to informal learning opportunities can expose adults to useful knowledge and stimulate their interest in further learning. This study will examine the impact of informal learning opportunities on educational engagement among community adults, with the purpose of determining whether informal learning experiences influence adults’ involvement and commitment to educational activities. Informal learning opportunities may occur through conversations with knowledgeable individuals, peer interactions, community activities, personal experiences, self-directed reading, practical tasks, and exposure to new information. These opportunities allow adults to learn according to their everyday needs and circumstances without necessarily following a formal curriculum. The flexibility and accessibility of informal learning can provide adults with continuous opportunities to acquire knowledge and develop skills from their immediate environment. Educational engagement involves adults’ willingness to participate in learning activities, maintain interest in educational experiences, devote attention to learning tasks, and remain committed to acquiring new knowledge and skills. Adults who encounter meaningful learning opportunities in their daily lives may become more interested in education and more willing to seek additional learning experiences. Informal learning can therefore contribute to educational engagement by making learning relevant to adults’ everyday experiences and practical needs. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise community adults who have access to various informal learning opportunities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the availability and exposure to informal learning opportunities and the level of educational engagement among respondents. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that informal learning opportunities have a significant impact on educational engagement among community adults. It is expected that adults who have greater access to meaningful informal learning experiences will demonstrate higher levels of interest, involvement, and commitment to educational activities. The study may further establish that learning opportunities arising from everyday experiences can encourage adults to maintain an active interest in acquiring knowledge and developing new skills. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and community learning. Adult educators and programme planners may need to recognise learning experiences that occur outside formal classrooms as valuable components of adult learning. Community-based learning activities, peer learning, practical demonstrations, discussion groups, and other informal learning opportunities can be incorporated into adult education initiatives to encourage adults to remain engaged with learning. The study will be significant to community adults, adult educators, community learning organisers, educational planners, and policymakers. Community adults may benefit from greater recognition of learning opportunities available within their everyday environments, while adult educators may gain information for designing learning activities that connect formal education with adults’ existing experiences. Educational planners and policymakers may also use the findings to support learning approaches that encourage continuous educational engagement within communities. The study will recommend that adult education providers and community learning organisers should identify and strengthen informal learning opportunities available to adults. Adults should be encouraged to learn through peer interaction, practical experiences, community discussions, reading, and other everyday learning activities. Adult educators should also connect informal learning experiences with organised educational programmes where appropriate. The study will conclude that informal learning opportunities can strengthen educational engagement among community adults by making learning more accessible, relevant, and connected to everyday life.
