Impact of Note-Taking Practices on Learning Outcomes among Adult Learners

Abstract

Note-taking practices refer to the methods and habits through which adult learners record, organise, summarise, and review important information during learning activities, while learning outcomes refer to the knowledge, understanding, skills, and academic results achieved by learners after engaging in educational activities. Effective note-taking can help adult learners identify important information, organise ideas, and review learning materials more efficiently. This study will examine the impact of note-taking practices on learning outcomes among adult learners, with the purpose of determining whether the note-taking practices adopted by adult learners influence their learning outcomes. Note-taking practices may include recording key points, summarising explanations, identifying important concepts, organising information under relevant headings, using symbols or abbreviations, and reviewing notes after learning sessions. Adult learners may use notebooks, printed materials, or digital devices to record information during classes and other educational activities. Appropriate note-taking practices can help learners process information actively and create useful materials for subsequent review. Learning outcomes refer to the knowledge, skills, understanding, and performance that learners demonstrate after completing learning activities. These outcomes may be reflected in assessment performance, comprehension of concepts, retention of information, completion of learning tasks, and application of acquired knowledge. Effective note-taking may support learning outcomes by helping adult learners retain important information, clarify concepts, and review educational content systematically. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure learners’ note-taking practices, while learning outcomes will be assessed using an appropriate learning or achievement measure. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that note-taking practices have a significant impact on learning outcomes among adult learners. It is expected that adult learners who demonstrate effective note-taking practices will achieve better learning outcomes than those who demonstrate less effective practices. The study may further establish that recording key information, organising notes, summarising important ideas, and reviewing notes regularly contribute to improved understanding and retention of learning content. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult educators should demonstrate practical techniques for identifying key information, organising ideas, summarising content, and reviewing notes after learning sessions. Learners should also be encouraged to maintain clear and organised notes for regular revision. The study will conclude that effective note-taking practices can contribute to improved learning outcomes among adult learners and should be encouraged as an important learning practice.
