Impact of Parenting Information Programmes on Parents’ Participation in Educational Activities

Abstract

Parenting information programmes are organized educational activities designed to provide parents with knowledge and practical information about child care, learning, development, and effective parenting practices, while parents’ participation in educational activities refers to their involvement in activities that support their children’s learning and educational experiences. Active parental participation can strengthen the connection between the home and educational environment and provide children with additional learning support. However, some parents may have limited access to relevant information about how they can contribute to their children’s education. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of parenting information programmes on parents’ participation in educational activities. Parenting information programmes provide parents with relevant knowledge through workshops, seminars, discussions, counselling sessions, printed materials, and other educational activities. The programmes may address areas such as understanding children’s educational needs, supporting learning at home, communicating with teachers, monitoring schoolwork, and responding appropriately to educational challenges. By providing practical and understandable information, these programmes can help parents develop greater awareness of their responsibilities and the different ways they can support their children’s education. Parents’ participation in educational activities involves activities such as attending school-related programmes, assisting with learning tasks, monitoring educational progress, communicating with teachers, attending parent meetings, and supporting children’s participation in learning opportunities. Parents who possess adequate information about educational processes may be more confident in identifying appropriate ways to become involved. Parenting information programmes can therefore influence participation by increasing parents’ knowledge of educational expectations, responsibilities, and opportunities for involvement. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of parents within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on parents’ exposure to parenting information programmes and their participation in educational activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of parenting information programmes on parents’ participation in educational activities. The study is expected to establish that parenting information programmes have a significant impact on parents’ participation in educational activities. Parents who have greater exposure to relevant parenting information programmes are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in school-related activities, home learning support, communication with teachers, and monitoring of their children’s educational progress. The findings may also indicate that access to practical parenting information improves parents’ understanding of how they can contribute meaningfully to their children’s education. The findings will have implications for adult education by highlighting the importance of providing parents with structured learning opportunities that address their educational responsibilities. Adult educators and parenting programme facilitators can use practical discussions, demonstrations, case examples, and interactive sessions to help parents understand effective ways of supporting children’s education. Such programmes can also encourage parents to apply newly acquired knowledge to their everyday educational responsibilities. The study will be beneficial to parents, adult educators, teachers, schools, parenting programme providers, community education centres, and educational policymakers. Parents may gain useful knowledge that enables them to participate more effectively in their children’s educational experiences, while teachers and schools may benefit from increased parental involvement. Adult educators and programme providers may also use the findings to design parenting information programmes that respond to parents’ educational needs. The study will recommend that parenting information programmes should be made accessible to parents through schools, adult learning centres, community education programmes, and other appropriate platforms. Programme facilitators should provide practical information on ways parents can participate in educational activities and support their children’s learning. Schools and relevant educational organizations should also encourage regular communication with parents and create opportunities for meaningful involvement. The study concludes that effective parenting information programmes can strengthen parents’ knowledge and encourage greater participation in educational activities.
