Impact of Peace Education on Adults’ Rejection of Violent Conflict

Abstract

Peace education is an important educational approach for developing knowledge, values, and attitudes that encourage peaceful relationships and constructive responses to disagreements. Adults’ rejection of violent conflict refers to their unwillingness to support, justify, encourage, or participate in the use of violence as a means of addressing disagreements. Weak rejection of violent conflict may contribute to the acceptance of aggression, retaliation, intimidation, and other destructive responses to disputes. The study therefore aims to examine the impact of peace education on adults’ rejection of violent conflict. Peace education exposes adults to principles such as tolerance, respect, empathy, nonviolence, cooperation, dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and respect for human dignity. Through group discussions, case studies, role-playing, reflective activities, and other participatory learning experiences, adults can examine the causes and consequences of violent conflict. These educational activities can help learners understand the negative effects of violence and develop greater appreciation for peaceful approaches to managing disagreements. Rejection of violent conflict involves an individual’s disposition to oppose the use of physical or psychological violence as a means of settling disagreements. Adults who strongly reject violent conflict may be more willing to consider dialogue, negotiation, compromise, cooperation, and other peaceful alternatives when faced with disputes. Peace education can influence this disposition by providing knowledge about the consequences of violence and encouraging values that support tolerance, restraint, mutual respect, and peaceful problem-solving. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected peace education or adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to peace education and adults’ rejection of violent conflict. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that peace education has a positive impact on adults’ rejection of violent conflict. Adults exposed to peace education are expected to demonstrate stronger opposition to the use of violence for resolving disagreements and greater willingness to consider peaceful alternatives. The study is also expected to indicate that educational exposure can strengthen adults’ understanding of the consequences of violent behaviour and encourage attitudes that discourage the acceptance or justification of violence during conflicts. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by highlighting the importance of peace-oriented values and nonviolent approaches within adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use practical activities, conflict scenarios, group discussions, role-playing, and reflective exercises to help learners examine the consequences of violent responses and consider peaceful alternatives. Such approaches can make peace education more relevant to adults’ experiences and encourage deeper understanding of the importance of rejecting violence. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, families, community organizations, peace education practitioners, and programme planners. Adult learners may benefit from stronger dispositions toward nonviolent responses to disagreements, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing effective peace education activities. Community organizations and programme planners may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that discourage acceptance of violent conflict and promote peaceful coexistence. The study may further contribute to knowledge on the role of adult education in developing nonviolent attitudes among adults. The study recommends that peace education programmes should place greater emphasis on learning experiences that help adults understand the consequences of violent conflict and develop strong opposition to violence as a means of resolving disagreements. Adult educators should incorporate case studies, role-playing, group discussions, and reflective activities that encourage learners to explore peaceful alternatives. Relevant learning materials should promote tolerance, empathy, dialogue, cooperation, and respect for human dignity. It is concluded that peace education can serve as an important means of strengthening adults’ rejection of violent conflict and encouraging constructive approaches to managing disagreements.
