Impact of Peace Education on Adults’ Understanding of Nonviolent Communication

Abstract

Nonviolent communication refers to a constructive approach to communication that emphasizes respectful expression, attentive listening, recognition of feelings and needs, and peaceful management of differences. Peace education provides adults with knowledge, values, and learning experiences that can promote peaceful interaction, mutual understanding, tolerance, and constructive responses to disagreements. Developing adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication is important because the way individuals communicate can influence relationships, conflict management, and cooperation within families, workplaces, and communities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of peace education on adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication. Peace education may expose adults to learning activities such as group discussions, role-playing, dialogue sessions, case studies, simulations, reflection exercises, and collaborative problem-solving. Through these activities, learners can examine peaceful communication principles, recognize the effects of aggressive or harmful communication, and explore ways of expressing concerns without unnecessarily escalating disagreements. Participatory learning can also encourage adults to listen to different perspectives and consider the feelings and needs underlying interpersonal disagreements. These experiences may provide adults with practical opportunities to develop a clearer understanding of nonviolent communication. Adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication refers to their ability to identify, explain, and distinguish communication practices that promote respectful and peaceful interaction. It includes understanding the importance of observing situations objectively, expressing feelings appropriately, identifying needs, communicating requests clearly, listening attentively, and responding without unnecessary blame or hostility. Adequate understanding can help adults recognize communication patterns that may escalate disagreements and identify more constructive alternatives. Peace education is expected to strengthen this understanding by providing relevant knowledge and learning experiences that connect nonviolent communication principles with everyday interactions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected peace education, Adult Education, and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of peace education on adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication. The study is expected to establish that peace education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant peace education activities will demonstrate improved understanding of respectful expression, active listening, emotional awareness, recognition of needs, clear requests, and constructive responses to disagreements. The findings may also indicate that participatory learning approaches help adults connect nonviolent communication principles with situations encountered in their personal and community relationships. Such outcomes would demonstrate the value of peace education in developing knowledge that supports peaceful and respectful communication. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, peace educators, community facilitators, social development practitioners, and organizations involved in peacebuilding activities. Peace education programmes can incorporate practical communication activities that allow adults to examine common communication challenges and practise constructive responses. Facilitators may also use role-playing, dialogue, case studies, and reflective exercises to help participants distinguish between communication approaches that escalate conflict and those that encourage mutual understanding. Strengthening adults’ knowledge of nonviolent communication may support more respectful interaction and constructive management of disagreements. The study is significant because improved understanding of nonviolent communication can contribute to healthier relationships, peaceful interaction, and constructive management of disagreements among adults. It is recommended that relevant peace and Adult Education programmes incorporate nonviolent communication principles into learning activities and provide opportunities for practical participation and reflection. Adult educators should emphasize respectful expression, attentive listening, emotional awareness, recognition of needs, and constructive responses during relevant learning sessions. The study concludes that peace education can provide an important educational foundation for improving adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication and promoting peaceful interpersonal and community relationships.
