Impact of Research Concepts Education on Adults’ Ability to Understand Research Problems

Abstract

Research problems form the foundation of research studies because they identify the issues, gaps, or situations that require systematic investigation. Understanding research problems enables adults to recognize what a study seeks to investigate, why the investigation is necessary, and how the problem relates to the broader subject under consideration. Research Concepts Education can provide adults with knowledge of fundamental research ideas and skills for examining research statements and identifying the central issues contained in them. This study therefore examines the impact of Research Concepts Education on adults’ ability to understand research problems. Research Concepts Education introduces learners to fundamental ideas associated with research, including research problems, research questions, objectives, variables, evidence, and the general structure of research studies. Through structured instruction, guided discussions, practical examples, and analysis of simple research topics, adults can develop familiarity with the language and organization of research. Learning activities that require adults to examine research statements, identify the issue being investigated, and distinguish the research problem from general background information can improve their understanding of how research problems are formulated and presented. The ability to understand research problems involves recognizing the specific issue that requires investigation and explaining its significance within a research context. Adults need to distinguish a clearly stated research problem from a general topic, personal opinion, or broad area of interest. Research Concepts Education can strengthen this ability by providing opportunities for learners to examine different research problem statements and identify the central issue, existing concern, or knowledge gap being addressed. Improved understanding of research problems can help adults interpret research objectives and questions more effectively and develop a clearer understanding of the direction of research studies. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to understand research problems. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Research Concepts Education on adults’ understanding of research problems. The study is expected to establish that Research Concepts Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to understand research problems. Adults exposed to relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify the central issue in research statements, distinguish research problems from general topics, recognize the purpose of investigating a problem, and relate research problems to other components of a study. The expected findings may further indicate that practical engagement with research examples improves adults’ confidence and competence in interpreting research problems. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practice and research-literacy development. Providing examples of well-defined and poorly defined research problems may also help learners understand the characteristics of a researchable problem and develop stronger analytical skills. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in strengthening adults’ research competence. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Research Concepts Education to adults’ understanding of fundamental research issues. The study recommends greater integration of practical research-concept activities into Adult Education programmes, particularly exercises that enable learners to identify, examine, and explain research problems. It concludes that strengthening adults’ understanding of research problems can provide an important foundation for interpreting research studies and developing further research skills.
