Impact of Social Entrepreneurship Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Community-Based Business Opportunities

Abstract

Social Entrepreneurship Education refers to structured learning that equips individuals with knowledge, skills, and attitudes for identifying social problems and developing sustainable entrepreneurial responses to community needs, while community-based business opportunities refer to viable economic activities that can emerge from local needs, resources, services, and market demands. The ability to identify such opportunities is important because adults can use local conditions to recognize potential enterprises that generate income while responding to community needs. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of how to recognize unmet needs, assess local resources, and convert community challenges into viable business opportunities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of Social Entrepreneurship Education on adults’ ability to identify community-based business opportunities. Social Entrepreneurship Education exposes adults to concepts and practices relating to social problem identification, opportunity recognition, innovation, resource utilization, business planning, and sustainable enterprise development. Through classroom discussions, case studies, community-based projects, practical exercises, and entrepreneurial activities, learners can examine social and economic conditions within their communities. These learning experiences can help adults develop the ability to observe local challenges, identify unmet needs, assess available resources, and consider possible enterprise responses. Identifying community-based business opportunities involves recognizing unmet needs, examining local demand, assessing available resources, identifying potential customers, and determining whether a proposed business activity can provide value. Adults who receive relevant social entrepreneurship education may become better equipped to examine their communities from an entrepreneurial perspective and recognize opportunities that may otherwise be overlooked. Social Entrepreneurship Education can therefore strengthen adults’ opportunity-recognition abilities by developing practical skills in observation, analysis, creativity, and enterprise thinking. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and entrepreneurship-related programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to Social Entrepreneurship Education and adults’ ability to identify community-based business opportunities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Social Entrepreneurship Education has a significant positive impact on adults’ ability to identify community-based business opportunities. Adults who receive relevant social entrepreneurship education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize unmet community needs, identify potential customers, assess local resources, and recognize possible business opportunities. The study may further indicate that practical community-oriented entrepreneurial activities improve adults’ confidence in identifying opportunities within their immediate environments. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the value of practical and community-oriented entrepreneurship instruction. Adult educators may incorporate community observation exercises, local market analysis, problem-identification activities, case studies, and opportunity-mapping exercises into social entrepreneurship programmes. These approaches can enable learners to connect classroom concepts with actual community conditions and develop practical abilities for recognizing potential business opportunities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, aspiring entrepreneurs, adult educators, social entrepreneurship trainers, community development organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop improved abilities to recognize viable opportunities within their communities, while educators and trainers may gain useful approaches for strengthening practical entrepreneurship education. Community development organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to support programmes that encourage adults to identify locally relevant economic opportunities and develop sustainable enterprise activities. The study will recommend that adult education and entrepreneurship programmes incorporate practical community-based opportunity-identification activities into their curriculum. Adult educators should expose learners to local market observation, community needs assessment, resource identification, and basic opportunity evaluation. Social entrepreneurship training should also provide learners with opportunities to develop and discuss business ideas based on real community conditions. The study concludes that effective Social Entrepreneurship Education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify community-based business opportunities and encourage the development of locally relevant entrepreneurial activities.
