Impact of Spatial-Information Education on Adults’ Ability to Use Community Maps
Abstract
Spatial information refers to knowledge about locations, distances, directions, landmarks, routes, and the arrangement of places within a geographical area. Understanding and using such information is important because adults often need to locate public facilities, identify routes, understand neighbourhood layouts, and navigate their communities effectively. However, limited knowledge of spatial information may make it difficult for some adults to interpret and use maps correctly. Therefore, this study examines the impact of spatial-information education on adults’ ability to use community maps. Spatial-information education provides adults with practical knowledge about map symbols, directions, locations, distances, scale, landmarks, and spatial relationships. Through demonstrations, map-reading exercises, guided practice, and community-based examples, adult learners can develop skills for interpreting different features represented on maps. Such educational activities can help adults understand how places are represented and how spatial information can be used to locate destinations and plan movement within a community. Adults’ ability to use community maps refers to their capacity to read, interpret, and apply map information when identifying locations, determining directions, locating landmarks, and following routes. Effective use of community maps requires adults to understand symbols, legends, orientation, distance, and relationships between different locations. Spatial-information education can strengthen these abilities by giving learners opportunities to practise interpreting and applying map information to realistic community situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and practical map-use assessment designed to measure spatial-information education and adults’ ability to use community maps. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that spatial-information education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to use community maps. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved ability to interpret map symbols, identify locations, determine directions, follow routes, and use basic spatial information when navigating their communities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education facilitators can incorporate practical map-reading activities, community maps, route exercises, landmark identification, and guided navigation tasks into lessons. These activities can make spatial learning more practical and provide adults with opportunities to apply map-reading knowledge to everyday situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community development organizations, local planning agencies, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved ability to use community maps when locating important places and planning movement, while facilitators can use the findings to improve practical learning activities. The study may also contribute to community education initiatives that promote functional spatial knowledge. The study will recommend that practical spatial-information education be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use locally relevant community maps, simple symbols, demonstrations, and hands-on map-reading exercises to strengthen adults’ practical skills. The study concludes that effective spatial-information education can improve adults’ ability to interpret and use community maps for everyday navigation and community-related activities.
