Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Electrical Installation Tools
Abstract
Electrical installation tools are essential equipment used for carrying out wiring, connection, testing, adjustment, and maintenance activities in residential, commercial, and institutional environments. Adequate knowledge of these tools enables adults to identify their names, functions, appropriate uses, and safe handling procedures. Inadequate knowledge may result in improper tool selection, poor installation practices, equipment damage, and avoidable safety risks. Vocational Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and develop useful technical skills through structured and hands-on learning experiences. This study therefore examines the impact of Vocational Education on adults’ knowledge of electrical installation tools. Vocational Education in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to commonly used electrical installation tools and their applications. Such activities may include demonstrations, tool-identification exercises, discussions, guided practice, and supervised practical activities. Learners may be exposed to tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, voltage testers, measuring instruments, cable cutters, and other basic electrical installation equipment. Practical exposure can help adults understand the functions of different tools and recognize the appropriate equipment required for specific installation tasks. Knowledge of electrical installation tools refers to adults’ understanding of the names, characteristics, functions, applications, and safe handling procedures associated with tools used in electrical installation activities. Adults with adequate knowledge are better positioned to select appropriate tools for specific tasks and understand the importance of using tools correctly. Vocational Education can strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with demonstrations and opportunities for supervised practice. Such learning experiences may improve adults’ confidence, accuracy, and awareness of safe practices when dealing with electrical installation tools. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education and skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate tool-identification knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of electrical installation tools. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Vocational Education on adults’ knowledge of electrical installation tools. The study is expected to establish that Vocational Education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of electrical installation tools. Adults exposed to relevant vocational learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify electrical tools, explain their functions, distinguish between tools with different applications, and select appropriate tools for specific installation activities. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised tool-handling activities contribute substantially to improved knowledge because learners can connect theoretical information with actual equipment. The findings are expected to have implications for vocational educators, electrical installation instructors, adult learning facilitators, and skills-development centres. Vocational programmes should provide learners with adequate opportunities to observe, identify, and handle commonly used electrical installation tools under appropriate supervision. Practical demonstrations can strengthen learners’ understanding while reinforcing the importance of proper tool selection and safe handling. Such training may also provide adults with useful technical knowledge that can support household maintenance, further vocational training, and livelihood development. The study will conclude that Vocational Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of electrical installation tools. It will recommend that relevant vocational programmes incorporate tool-identification exercises, practical demonstrations, supervised activities, appropriate instructional materials, and safety guidance. Educators should provide repeated opportunities for learners to distinguish tools according to their functions and applications. The study will contribute to the development of practical vocational programmes that equip adults with relevant electrical installation knowledge for safe and effective practical activities.
