Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Event Decoration Materials

Abstract

Event decoration materials refer to the various items and resources used to enhance the appearance, atmosphere, functionality, and visual presentation of event venues. Vocational education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills for identifying, selecting, handling, and appropriately using different decoration materials. Adequate knowledge of event decoration materials is important for achieving suitable event themes, effective venue presentation, proper material selection, and efficient decoration practices. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of event decoration materials. Vocational education can expose adults to event decoration materials through practical demonstrations, material identification exercises, visual learning resources, group activities, guided practice, and simulated decoration projects. These learning activities can introduce learners to materials such as fabrics, balloons, ribbons, flowers, backdrops, lighting accessories, table decorations, drapes, and decorative structures. Practical exercises can help adults understand the characteristics, functions, appropriate uses, handling requirements, and selection of different materials according to event type and decoration needs. Adults’ knowledge of event decoration materials refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the appropriate uses of materials commonly employed in event decoration. This knowledge includes understanding material characteristics, suitability for different event settings, colour and theme coordination, handling requirements, and basic storage and maintenance practices. Improved knowledge can enable adults to make appropriate choices when preparing and decorating event venues. Vocational education is therefore expected to strengthen this knowledge by providing structured instruction and practical opportunities for identifying and applying decoration materials. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational, event management, hospitality, and Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate material-identification and knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of event decoration materials. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of event decoration materials. The study is expected to establish that vocational education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of event decoration materials. Adults exposed to relevant vocational learning are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify different materials, explain their functions, distinguish their appropriate uses, and select suitable materials for different event requirements. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations, visual materials, and simulated decoration activities are useful for strengthening adults’ knowledge and confidence. Such findings would demonstrate the value of vocational education in developing practical knowledge relevant to event decoration activities. The study is significant because improved knowledge of event decoration materials can contribute to better material selection, effective venue presentation, creative event decoration, and livelihood opportunities. It is recommended that vocational education programmes provide practical learning through material demonstrations, identification exercises, supervised decoration projects, and realistic event simulations. Vocational educators and event practitioners should also expose learners to different materials and explain their appropriate applications, handling, and storage. The study concludes that vocational education can serve as an important means of improving adults’ knowledge of event decoration materials and supporting effective participation in event decoration and related entrepreneurial activities.
