Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Plumbing Equipment

Abstract

Vocational education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support occupational competence, self-reliance, household maintenance, and income-generating activities. Plumbing involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of water supply, drainage, and related piping systems, requiring appropriate knowledge of tools and equipment. However, inadequate knowledge of plumbing equipment may affect adults’ ability to carry out basic plumbing activities safely and effectively. This study will examine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of plumbing equipment. Vocational education may expose adults to different plumbing equipment and their functions, including pipe cutters, pipe wrenches, adjustable spanners, pliers, measuring tapes, pipe vices, threading tools, plungers, and other equipment used in plumbing activities. Learning activities may include demonstrations, equipment identification exercises, discussions, practical tasks, and supervised workshop activities. These experiences can help adults understand the characteristics, functions, appropriate applications, handling procedures, and safety considerations associated with different plumbing equipment. Adults’ knowledge of plumbing equipment refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of equipment employed in plumbing activities. This may include knowledge of equipment selection, handling, maintenance, safe usage, and application to specific plumbing tasks. Vocational education can strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that enable adults to observe and practise the appropriate use of plumbing equipment. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education, technical, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a plumbing equipment knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant equipment, functions, applications, and safety practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of plumbing equipment. The study is expected to establish that vocational education can improve adults’ knowledge of plumbing equipment. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of equipment identification, functions, selection, handling, maintenance, and appropriate application. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised workshop activities enhance adults’ ability to recognize suitable plumbing equipment for different tasks and use such equipment appropriately and safely. The study will conclude that vocational education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of plumbing equipment. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide adequate plumbing equipment, practical demonstrations, equipment identification activities, supervised workshop exercises, and opportunities for repeated hands-on practice. Improved knowledge of plumbing equipment may contribute to greater technical competence, safe work practices, self-reliance, employability, entrepreneurship, and income-generating opportunities
