Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Wall Finishing Techniques
Abstract
Wall finishing techniques involve practical methods used to improve the appearance, smoothness, durability, and overall quality of interior and exterior wall surfaces. Knowledge of these techniques enables adults to understand appropriate surface preparation, material selection, application procedures, and finishing methods. Inadequate knowledge may lead to uneven surfaces, poor finishing, material wastage, and reduced durability of completed work. Vocational Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge through demonstrations, guided activities, and hands-on learning. This study therefore examines the impact of Vocational Education on adults’ knowledge of wall finishing techniques. Vocational Education in this context involves structured learning activities through which adults are introduced to basic wall finishing materials, tools, procedures, and techniques. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, surface-preparation exercises, material identification, mixing procedures, application practices, and supervised finishing activities. Learners may be exposed to techniques such as plastering, rendering, smoothing, filling minor surface imperfections, and applying suitable finishing materials. Practical exposure enables adults to observe appropriate procedures and develop familiarity with the sequence of activities required for effective wall finishing. Knowledge of wall finishing techniques refers to adults’ understanding of the tools, materials, preparation methods, application procedures, and finishing practices used to achieve satisfactory wall surfaces. Adults with adequate knowledge are better able to identify suitable materials, prepare surfaces appropriately, and select suitable finishing procedures for different wall conditions. Vocational Education can strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with practical demonstrations and supervised activities. Such learning experiences can improve adults’ understanding of the relationship between surface preparation, material application, finishing quality, and maintenance requirements. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education and skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of wall finishing techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Vocational Education on adults’ knowledge of wall finishing techniques. The study is expected to establish that Vocational Education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of wall finishing techniques. Adults exposed to relevant vocational learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of surface preparation, material identification, application procedures, smoothing methods, and appropriate finishing practices. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities contribute significantly to understanding because learners can observe the correct procedures and relate theoretical explanations to actual wall finishing tasks. The findings are expected to have implications for vocational educators, adult learning facilitators, skills-development centres, and organisations involved in practical training. Vocational Education programmes should provide appropriate tools, materials, demonstrations, and opportunities for supervised practice in wall finishing activities. Practical learning can help adults develop useful knowledge that may be applied to household maintenance, renovation activities, and vocational opportunities. Adequate attention to safety procedures during practical sessions may also promote responsible handling of tools and finishing materials. The study will conclude that Vocational Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of wall finishing techniques. It will recommend that relevant vocational programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, material-identification activities, surface-preparation exercises, guided application, and repeated opportunities for supervised practice. Educators should also ensure that learners understand the appropriate sequence and safety requirements associated with wall finishing activities. The study will contribute to the development of practical vocational programmes that equip adults with relevant knowledge for household maintenance, construction-related activities, and livelihood development.
