Impact of Workplace Etiquette Education on Adults’ Professional Communication Skills

Abstract

Workplace etiquette education refers to structured learning that helps adults understand and apply appropriate standards of behaviour, courtesy, respect, and communication within professional environments. Adults’ professional communication skills involve their ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, appropriately, and effectively with colleagues, supervisors, clients, and other workplace stakeholders. Poor workplace etiquette may contribute to misunderstandings, inappropriate interactions, strained professional relationships, and ineffective communication. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of workplace etiquette education on adults’ professional communication skills. Workplace etiquette education introduces adults to appropriate standards for professional interactions, including respectful language, appropriate greetings, punctuality, listening behaviour, telephone etiquette, email conduct, meeting behaviour, and appropriate workplace conversations. Through discussions, demonstrations, case studies, role-play activities, and practical exercises, learners can examine how professional behaviour influences communication. These learning activities provide opportunities for adults to understand the expectations associated with effective communication in different workplace situations. Professional communication skills require adults to convey information accurately, listen attentively, respond appropriately, and maintain respectful interactions across different workplace contexts. Effective communication also involves choosing suitable language, maintaining professionalism during difficult conversations, and observing appropriate communication procedures. Workplace etiquette education can strengthen these abilities by helping adults understand how professional conduct affects the way messages are delivered and received. Improved knowledge of workplace etiquette may therefore contribute to more effective professional communication. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the impact of workplace etiquette education on adults’ professional communication skills. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a professional communication skills assessment administered before and after exposure to workplace etiquette education. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ communication skills. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to workplace etiquette education demonstrate improved professional communication skills compared with their performance before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show improvement in areas such as respectful verbal communication, active listening, appropriate workplace language, professional correspondence, and interpersonal communication. The findings may indicate that structured workplace etiquette education can strengthen adults’ ability to communicate appropriately and effectively in professional environments. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use realistic workplace scenarios, role-play, demonstrations, group discussions, and communication exercises to make etiquette education practical and relevant. Learning activities can expose adults to different professional communication situations and provide opportunities to practise appropriate responses. Feedback from educators and peers can further help learners identify communication weaknesses and develop more effective professional habits. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, employers, workplaces, professional organizations, and institutions offering continuing education programmes. Adults may acquire stronger communication skills for interacting with colleagues, supervisors, customers, and other professional contacts. Educators may also gain useful information for developing workplace-oriented learning programmes, while employers may benefit from employees who demonstrate greater professionalism and effectiveness in workplace communication. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate workplace etiquette education through practical communication exercises, role-play, case studies, demonstrations, and guided discussions. Adult educators should emphasize respectful language, attentive listening, professional correspondence, appropriate workplace behaviour, and effective interpersonal communication. Regular opportunities for learners to practise professional communication in realistic workplace situations should also be provided. The study concludes that workplace etiquette education has the potential to improve adults’ professional communication skills and promote more effective interactions within professional environments.
