Analysis of Immediate Annuity Values Using Nigerian Mortality Data

Abstract

Immediate annuities are financial products that provide regular payments beginning shortly after the annuity contract is established and continuing according to the terms of the agreement. The actuarial value of an immediate annuity depends largely on the expected survival of the annuitant and the time value of money. Mortality data are therefore essential for estimating the probability that annuity payments will continue at different ages and for determining the present value of future annuity obligations. The study examines immediate annuity values using Nigerian mortality data. It will assess how mortality patterns observed within the Nigerian population influence the actuarial valuation of immediate annuity contracts. The study will focus on age-specific mortality rates, survival probabilities, life expectancy, annuity payment periods, and interest rate assumptions in determining immediate annuity values. The study will further analyse differences in annuity values across selected ages and mortality groups. Nigerian mortality data will be used to estimate survival probabilities and expected payment durations, while actuarial present value techniques will be applied to calculate the corresponding immediate annuity values. Sensitivity analysis will also be conducted to assess the effect of changes in mortality and interest rate assumptions on the estimated annuity values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant Nigerian mortality and demographic data will be obtained from appropriate official and actuarial sources, while selected interest rate and annuity assumptions will be applied to the valuation models. Descriptive statistics, mortality analysis, life table techniques, actuarial present value calculations, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be employed to evaluate immediate annuity values. The study is expected to reveal variations in immediate annuity values across different ages and mortality groups. Individuals with higher expected survival periods may generate longer expected streams of annuity payments and consequently different actuarial values. The findings may also show that changes in interest rate assumptions can significantly influence annuity values, with lower discount rates generally increasing the present value of future payments. The study will provide useful information to actuaries, pension administrators, life insurance companies, financial analysts, and policymakers involved in retirement income planning. The findings may support the development of annuity valuation models that better reflect Nigerian mortality experience and improve the accuracy of retirement income estimates. The study may also contribute to better understanding of mortality assumptions in the pricing and valuation of immediate annuity products. The study concludes that Nigerian mortality data provide an important basis for estimating immediate annuity values because survival probabilities determine the expected duration of future annuity payments. It is therefore recommended that actuaries and insurance companies regularly review mortality assumptions using relevant Nigerian mortality experience when valuing immediate annuities. Appropriate mortality and interest rate assumptions may improve annuity valuation accuracy, retirement planning, and the management of long-term annuity liabilities.
