Effect of Risk Identification Practices on Insurance Loss Prevention
Risk identification practices are important components of effective risk management because they enable organisations and individuals to recognise potential sources of loss before they result in financial or operational consequences. Insurance loss prevention involves measures taken to reduce the likelihood, frequency, or severity of losses associated with insured risks. However, inadequate identification of potential hazards may limit the effectiveness of preventive measures and increase exposure to avoidable losses. This study therefore examines the effect of risk identification practices on insurance loss prevention. Risk identification practices involve systematic activities used to recognise, examine, and document potential risks within an organisation or insurance-related environment. These practices may include risk assessment, inspection, review of previous loss experiences, identification of hazardous conditions, analysis of operational activities, and regular monitoring of emerging risks. Effective identification practices provide useful information for determining appropriate preventive measures and can enable insurers and policyholders to respond to potential sources of loss before they develop into significant incidents. Insurance loss prevention refers to actions designed to minimise the occurrence and potential severity of insured losses. Effective loss prevention may involve safety inspections, hazard control, risk monitoring, preventive maintenance, employee awareness, appropriate security measures, and compliance with established safety procedures. When risks are identified accurately and promptly, appropriate preventive actions can be introduced to address those risks. Risk identification practices may therefore contribute to improved loss prevention by providing a clearer basis for anticipating hazards and implementing suitable control measures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise relevant insurance professionals and other appropriate participants involved in risk assessment and loss prevention activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on risk identification practices and insurance loss prevention. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of risk identification practices on insurance loss prevention. The study is expected to establish that effective risk identification practices have a positive effect on insurance loss prevention. It is expected that organisations and insurance practitioners that systematically identify, assess, document, and monitor potential risks will demonstrate stronger loss prevention practices. The findings may further indicate that early recognition of hazards enables appropriate preventive measures to be implemented, thereby reducing exposure to avoidable incidents and improving the effectiveness of insurance risk management activities. The study will conclude that effective risk identification is an important foundation for strengthening insurance loss prevention. It will recommend that insurance organisations and relevant stakeholders improve systematic risk assessment, regular inspection, risk documentation, monitoring procedures, and communication of identified hazards. Strengthening these practices can support timely preventive action, improve risk management decisions, reduce the likelihood and severity of losses, and contribute to more effective insurance operations.
