Effect of Risk-Based Underwriting on Insurance Profitability
Risk-based underwriting is an important insurance practice that enables insurers to assess the level of risk associated with prospective and existing policyholders before determining appropriate underwriting decisions. Insurance profitability refers to the ability of an insurance company to generate sufficient income from its underwriting and investment activities to cover claims, operating expenses, and other obligations while maintaining sustainable returns. Effective risk assessment is important to profitability because inappropriate acceptance of high-risk exposures or inadequate pricing can increase claims costs and weaken financial performance. This study therefore examines the effect of risk-based underwriting on insurance profitability. Risk-based underwriting involves the systematic evaluation of factors that influence the likelihood and potential severity of insured losses. Insurance companies may assess the characteristics of applicants, historical claims information, exposure levels, policy conditions, and other relevant risk indicators when making underwriting decisions. The process can support appropriate risk classification, premium determination, policy selection, coverage decisions, and risk acceptance. By aligning underwriting decisions with the characteristics of individual risks, insurers can improve the quality of their insurance portfolios and strengthen their ability to manage potential losses. Insurance profitability is influenced by the relationship between premium income, claims expenses, operating costs, investment income, and other financial factors. Sound underwriting practices can contribute to profitability by helping insurers select risks carefully, establish appropriate premiums, control adverse claims experience, and maintain a balanced portfolio. Conversely, weak underwriting decisions may result in inadequate premiums relative to the risks assumed, increased claims obligations, and reduced underwriting performance. Risk-based underwriting may therefore play an important role in improving the financial sustainability and profitability of insurance businesses. The study will adopt a suitable ex-post facto research design. The population will comprise selected insurance companies, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be obtained from relevant secondary sources, including audited financial statements, annual reports, regulatory publications, and other appropriate insurance industry records. Measures of risk-based underwriting and insurance profitability will be clearly defined and analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The analysis will be used to determine the effect of risk-based underwriting on insurance profitability. The study is expected to establish that effective risk-based underwriting has a positive effect on insurance profitability. It is expected that insurers with stronger risk assessment, risk classification, underwriting selection, and risk pricing practices will demonstrate better profitability outcomes through improved control of underwriting losses and more appropriate premium generation. The findings may also indicate that effective underwriting decisions contribute to a healthier risk portfolio and reduce the financial pressures associated with poorly assessed insurance exposures. The study will conclude that risk-based underwriting is an important component of effective insurance management and sustainable profitability. It will recommend that insurance companies strengthen their underwriting procedures through improved risk assessment systems, reliable data analysis, appropriate risk classification, regular review of underwriting policies, and adequate monitoring of claims experience. These measures can help insurers make better risk acceptance and pricing decisions while supporting improved financial performance and long-term profitability.
