Effect of Insurance Exposure Analysis on Risk Management Decisions
Insurance exposure analysis is an important process in risk management because it provides information about the nature, frequency, severity, and potential financial consequences of risks faced by individuals and organisations. Effective analysis of insurance exposures enables decision-makers to identify significant areas of vulnerability, evaluate available protection, and select appropriate strategies for managing identified risks. However, inadequate analysis of insurance exposures may result in inappropriate risk management decisions, insufficient coverage, or inefficient allocation of resources. This study therefore examines the effect of insurance exposure analysis on risk management decisions. Insurance exposure analysis involves the systematic identification and assessment of assets, activities, operations, liabilities, and other circumstances that may expose an individual or organisation to potential loss. The process may involve examining the likelihood and potential impact of different risks, reviewing existing insurance arrangements, assessing coverage adequacy, and identifying areas where additional protection may be required. Proper exposure analysis provides relevant information that can assist decision-makers in comparing risk treatment options, determining appropriate levels of insurance protection, and developing more informed risk management strategies. Risk management decisions refer to choices made concerning the identification, assessment, treatment, monitoring, and control of potential risks. Such decisions may include risk avoidance, risk reduction, risk retention, risk transfer through insurance, and the selection or adjustment of insurance coverage. Insurance exposure analysis can contribute to these decisions by providing a clearer understanding of the risks requiring attention and the potential financial implications associated with them. Consequently, reliable exposure information can support more systematic and informed risk management decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise relevant insurance professionals, risk managers, business managers, or other individuals involved in insurance and risk management decisions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on insurance exposure analysis and risk management decisions. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of insurance exposure analysis on risk management decisions. The study is expected to establish that effective insurance exposure analysis has a positive effect on risk management decisions. It is expected that respondents who apply systematic exposure identification, risk assessment, coverage review, and loss evaluation will demonstrate greater capacity to make informed decisions concerning risk treatment and insurance protection. The findings may further indicate that comprehensive exposure analysis helps decision-makers recognise significant vulnerabilities, evaluate alternative risk management options, and reduce the possibility of making decisions based on incomplete risk information. The study will conclude that insurance exposure analysis is an important component of effective risk management decision-making. It will recommend that organisations and relevant decision-makers strengthen their exposure identification and assessment processes, regularly review insurance arrangements, maintain accurate risk information, and use systematic analysis when evaluating risk management alternatives. These measures can improve the quality of risk management decisions, support appropriate insurance protection, and contribute to better preparedness for potential financial losses.
