Effect of Underwriting Accuracy on Insurance Claim Outcomes

Abstract

Underwriting accuracy is an important aspect of insurance operations because it influences the quality of risk assessment, policy selection, premium determination, and coverage decisions. Accurate underwriting enables insurers to identify relevant risk characteristics and establish appropriate terms and conditions before policies are issued. However, inaccuracies in evaluating risks may contribute to inappropriate policy decisions, disputes, delays, or difficulties during claims processing. This study therefore examines the effect of underwriting accuracy on insurance claim outcomes. Underwriting accuracy involves the extent to which insurers correctly evaluate relevant information about an applicant or insured risk before accepting coverage. It may involve accurate assessment of risk characteristics, verification of information provided by applicants, appropriate classification of risks, determination of suitable policy terms, and proper documentation of underwriting decisions. Effective underwriting accuracy can provide a sound basis for managing insured risks and ensuring that policy conditions are clearly established from the beginning of the insurance relationship. Insurance claim outcomes refer to the results experienced when claims are submitted and assessed, including timely settlement, claim approval or rejection, adequacy of claim decisions, and the occurrence of disputes during the claims process. The quality of underwriting decisions may influence these outcomes because accurate risk assessment and clear documentation can help insurers determine whether submitted claims fall within the agreed policy conditions. Consequently, stronger underwriting accuracy may contribute to more consistent claims decisions, reduced processing difficulties, and improved efficiency in claims administration. The study will adopt a suitable correlational research design. The population will comprise relevant insurance professionals and claims personnel from selected insurance companies, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure underwriting accuracy and insurance claim outcomes. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of underwriting accuracy on insurance claim outcomes. The study is expected to establish that underwriting accuracy has a positive effect on insurance claim outcomes. More accurate risk assessment, information verification, risk classification, policy documentation, and underwriting decisions are expected to be associated with clearer and more consistent claims assessment and settlement processes. The findings may also indicate that weaknesses in underwriting accuracy can contribute to claim disputes, inconsistent decisions, processing difficulties, and other unfavourable claim outcomes. The study will conclude that accurate underwriting is important for achieving effective insurance claim outcomes. It will recommend that insurance companies strengthen underwriting procedures through improved information verification, appropriate risk assessment practices, adequate documentation, regular staff training, and effective use of relevant underwriting systems. These measures can promote sound underwriting decisions, improve claims administration, reduce avoidable disputes, and enhance the overall efficiency of insurance operations.
