Effect of Risk Profiling on Insurance Product Pricing
Risk profiling is an important process in insurance that involves identifying, assessing, and evaluating the characteristics and level of risk associated with policyholders or prospective policyholders. Insurance product pricing refers to the determination of premiums charged for insurance coverage based on the expected level of risk, potential losses, policy conditions, and other relevant factors. Effective risk profiling can enable insurers to differentiate between various categories of risks and establish pricing decisions that more accurately reflect the underlying exposure. This study therefore examines the effect of risk profiling on insurance product pricing. Risk profiling involves the systematic collection and analysis of relevant information about risks before insurance products are priced. Factors such as the nature of the insured exposure, historical loss experience, claims characteristics, demographic information, asset characteristics, and other risk indicators may be considered during the profiling process. Through effective risk classification and assessment, insurers can obtain a clearer understanding of the likelihood and potential severity of losses. This information can support more informed premium-setting decisions and contribute to improved insurance pricing practices. Insurance product pricing is concerned with determining appropriate premiums that adequately reflect the expected cost and level of risk associated with providing coverage. Accurate pricing is important to insurers because premiums need to be sufficient to support claims obligations, operating expenses, and the sustainability of insurance operations while remaining competitive in the market. Weak or inaccurate risk assessment may contribute to inappropriate pricing, potentially resulting in premiums that do not adequately correspond with the risks assumed. Risk profiling may therefore influence pricing accuracy by providing relevant information for distinguishing different risk categories. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise relevant insurance professionals involved in underwriting, risk assessment, and product pricing, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on risk profiling practices and insurance product pricing. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of risk profiling on insurance product pricing. The study is expected to establish that effective risk profiling has a positive effect on insurance product pricing. The findings are expected to indicate that systematic identification, classification, and assessment of risk characteristics provide insurers with useful information for developing premiums that better reflect differences in risk exposure. The study may also show that effective risk profiling can support greater consistency in underwriting and pricing decisions and contribute to improved management of risks associated with insurance products. The study will conclude that risk profiling is an important component of effective insurance product pricing because the quality of pricing decisions depends substantially on the quality of information available about the risks being insured. It will recommend that insurance companies strengthen risk identification and classification procedures, improve the quality of data used in risk assessment, and provide continuous professional development for personnel involved in underwriting and pricing. These measures can support more accurate pricing decisions, better risk management, and sustainable insurance operations.
