Effect of Risk Assessment Practices on Insurance Underwriting Decisions

Abstract

Risk assessment practices are important components of insurance underwriting because they enable insurers to evaluate the likelihood and potential severity of losses before accepting risks. Insurance underwriting decisions involve determining whether a risk should be accepted, declined, or accepted under specific terms and conditions, including appropriate premium considerations. However, weaknesses in risk assessment practices may affect the accuracy, consistency, and quality of underwriting decisions. This study therefore examines the effect of risk assessment practices on insurance underwriting decisions. Risk assessment practices involve the systematic identification, examination, evaluation, and classification of factors that may influence the occurrence and financial consequences of insured events. In insurance operations, underwriters may consider information relating to the nature of the risk, exposure characteristics, claims history, financial information, property or operational conditions, and other relevant underwriting information. Effective risk assessment practices can provide underwriters with reliable information for evaluating risks and making decisions that are consistent with established underwriting principles and organisational policies. Insurance underwriting decisions refer to the judgments made by insurers concerning the acceptance, rejection, classification, and terms of insurance risks. The quality of these decisions depends partly on the availability and proper evaluation of relevant risk information. When risk assessment is carefully conducted, underwriters may be better positioned to identify significant exposures, distinguish between different levels of risk, determine suitable underwriting conditions, and reduce uncertainty in the decision-making process. Risk assessment practices may therefore have an important influence on the quality of insurance underwriting decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise insurance professionals involved in risk assessment and underwriting activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure risk assessment practices and insurance underwriting decisions. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of risk assessment practices on insurance underwriting decisions. The study is expected to establish that effective risk assessment practices have a positive effect on insurance underwriting decisions. It is expected that insurers with systematic approaches to identifying, evaluating, and classifying risks will demonstrate more informed and consistent underwriting decisions. The findings may further indicate that accurate risk information, proper risk classification, careful evaluation of exposures, and effective assessment procedures contribute to better decisions concerning risk acceptance and underwriting conditions. The study will conclude that effective risk assessment practices are essential for improving the quality of insurance underwriting decisions. It will recommend that insurance companies strengthen risk assessment procedures, provide continuous professional development for underwriting personnel, improve access to relevant risk information, and promote consistent application of established assessment guidelines. These measures can support sound underwriting decisions, improve risk selection, and contribute to more effective insurance operations.
