Analysis of Mortality Trends Using Nigerian Population Data

Abstract

The study examines mortality trends using Nigerian population data, with emphasis on identifying changes in mortality patterns and assessing their implications for demographic and actuarial analysis. Mortality trends provide important information about the frequency and distribution of deaths within a population and can be used to understand changes in survival patterns and life expectancy. Analysing mortality trends is therefore important for estimating population risks, supporting demographic planning, and providing reliable information for insurance and other applications that depend on accurate mortality estimates. The study focuses on the analysis of mortality patterns across relevant age groups and population categories in Nigeria. Differences in mortality experience may occur across age groups, periods, and geographical areas due to variations in demographic, socioeconomic, and environmental conditions. The study considers how available population data can be used to identify these patterns and determine whether mortality rates have increased, declined, or remained relatively stable over time. Such analysis can provide useful evidence for understanding the changing mortality experience of the Nigerian population. The study further examines the relationship between mortality trends and changes in life expectancy and survival patterns. Declining mortality rates may indicate improvements in survival and contribute to increases in expected lifespan, while unfavourable mortality changes may have the opposite effect. The study therefore considers how mortality data can be analysed to identify significant trends and variations in population survival. The findings may provide useful information for demographic assessment, actuarial calculations, public planning, and other areas where reliable mortality information is required. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Secondary Nigerian population and mortality data will be analysed to identify patterns and trends in mortality rates over the selected period. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques will be employed to examine mortality variations across relevant population groups and time periods. Appropriate mortality indicators will also be used to assess changes in survival patterns and life expectancy, thereby providing a statistical basis for interpreting mortality trends within the Nigerian population. The study is expected to reveal identifiable patterns and changes in mortality rates within the Nigerian population. The findings are expected to show variations in mortality experience across different age groups and periods, with possible improvements or increases in mortality depending on the population category and period examined. The analysis is also expected to demonstrate the usefulness of population mortality data in identifying changes in survival patterns and understanding the demographic characteristics of mortality in Nigeria. The study is further expected to establish that continuous analysis of mortality trends can provide valuable information for actuarial and demographic applications. Reliable mortality estimates may assist in the development of appropriate mortality assumptions for life insurance, pension planning, annuity valuation, and population projections. Regular monitoring of mortality data may also help researchers and relevant institutions identify significant changes in population survival and improve the reliability of future mortality assessments. The study concludes that the analysis of Nigerian population data provides an important basis for understanding mortality trends and changes in survival patterns. It is therefore recommended that mortality and population data be collected, maintained, and regularly analysed using appropriate statistical and actuarial techniques. Improved availability and quality of mortality data can support more accurate demographic assessments, strengthen actuarial applications, and provide reliable information for planning and decision-making relating to the Nigerian population.
