Effect of Actuarial Assumption Sensitivity on Insurance Product Values

Abstract

Actuarial assumptions represent the expected future conditions used by actuaries to estimate the values, costs, and liabilities associated with insurance products. These assumptions may include mortality rates, interest rates, expense levels, lapse rates, inflation rates, and other factors that influence expected insurance cash flows. The sensitivity of insurance product values to changes in these assumptions is therefore important for accurate actuarial valuation and effective insurance risk management. The study examines the effect of actuarial assumption sensitivity on insurance product values. It will assess how changes in selected actuarial assumptions influence the estimated values of different insurance products. The study will consider the relationship between assumption changes and product values, with particular attention to variations in expected benefits, premiums, policy durations, and projected insurance liabilities. The study will focus on major actuarial assumptions such as mortality rates, interest rates, expense assumptions, lapse rates, and inflation rates. Actuarial valuation and sensitivity analysis techniques will be applied to determine changes in insurance product values under alternative assumption scenarios. The analysis will also examine the extent to which individual assumptions contribute to variations in estimated product values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance and actuarial data, including mortality experience, interest rate information, expense patterns, lapse experience, policy durations, benefit amounts, and premium values, will be considered. Descriptive statistics, actuarial present value calculations, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to evaluate the effect of changes in actuarial assumptions on insurance product values. The study is expected to show that insurance product values are sensitive to changes in actuarial assumptions. Changes in mortality, interest rates, expenses, lapse rates, or inflation may produce corresponding changes in expected cash flows, premiums, reserves, and overall product values. The magnitude of these effects may differ according to the type and duration of the insurance product and the assumption being varied. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, product developers, and financial managers. The findings may support more reliable product valuation, pricing decisions, reserve estimation, liability management, and financial planning. The study may also assist insurers in identifying assumptions that require closer monitoring and regular review. The study concludes that sensitivity to actuarial assumptions is an important consideration in determining the values of insurance products. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly review their actuarial assumptions and conduct sensitivity and scenario analyses to assess the potential effects of assumption changes on product values, premiums, reserves, and insurance liabilities.
