Effect of Asset Share Accumulation on Participating Life Insurance Benefits
Abstract
Asset share accumulation is an important actuarial concept used in participating life insurance to assess the financial value generated by a policy through accumulated premiums, investment returns, expenses, and insurance costs. The accumulated asset share provides an indication of the financial resources associated with a policy over time and can influence the benefits ultimately provided to policyholders. Changes in asset share accumulation may therefore affect the level and sustainability of participating life insurance benefits. This study examines the effect of asset share accumulation on participating life insurance benefits. The study will investigate how the accumulation of policy asset shares influences the value of benefits payable to policyholders under participating life insurance contracts. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between accumulated premiums, investment returns, policy expenses, mortality costs, and the resulting asset share available to support policyholder benefits. The study will consider factors such as premium contributions, investment returns, mortality costs, management expenses, policy duration, surrender values, guaranteed benefits, and bonus allocations. Actuarial asset share techniques will be applied to estimate accumulated policy values and evaluate their relationship with participating insurance benefits. Comparative analysis will also be conducted under alternative investment and expense assumptions to determine how changes in asset share accumulation affect benefit values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant actuarial data and hypothetical participating life insurance policies will be analysed using asset share calculations, accumulation methods, actuarial present value techniques, and statistical procedures. Sensitivity analysis will be used to examine the effects of changes in investment returns, premium levels, mortality assumptions, expenses, and policy duration on asset share accumulation and participating policy benefits. The study is expected to reveal that higher asset share accumulation may support higher participating life insurance benefits, particularly where strong investment returns and adequate premium contributions increase the financial resources associated with policies. Conversely, high expenses, unfavourable investment performance, or increased mortality costs may reduce asset share accumulation and place downward pressure on benefit values. The effect is expected to vary according to policy duration, benefit structure, and the financial assumptions applied in the valuation process. The findings of the study may provide useful information to actuaries, life insurance companies, policyholders, product developers, and insurance regulators. Understanding the relationship between asset share accumulation and participating benefits can support more accurate policy valuation, appropriate bonus determination, effective surplus management, and improved product design. The study may also assist insurers in assessing whether accumulated policy values provide adequate support for the benefits allocated to participating policyholders. The study concludes that asset share accumulation is an important factor in the determination of participating life insurance benefits because it reflects the financial value generated by policies over time. It is therefore recommended that insurers apply appropriate asset share methodologies, regularly monitor accumulated policy values, use realistic actuarial assumptions, and maintain effective investment and expense management practices when determining participating life insurance benefits.
