Effect of Construction Project Duration on Construction Insurance Claims
Abstract
Construction insurance provides financial protection against losses and damages that may occur during the execution of construction projects. The duration of a construction project determines the length of time during which insured activities, equipment, materials, and structures remain exposed to potential risks. Consequently, differences in project duration may influence the frequency and financial characteristics of construction insurance claims. This study examines the effect of construction project duration on construction insurance claims. It will investigate how variations in the length of construction projects influence the occurrence and characteristics of insurance claims. The study will consider different project-duration periods and assess their implications for claim frequency, claim severity, and expected insurance losses. The study will focus on factors such as project duration, claim frequency, claim severity, construction activities, project size, equipment usage, material exposure, site conditions, accident occurrence, and weather-related risks. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to examine how the length of construction projects affects the probability and financial magnitude of insured claims. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between prolonged project exposure and the accumulation of construction-related risks. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical construction insurance claims and project-duration data will be analysed using appropriate statistical and actuarial methods. Descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, probability models, regression techniques, and comparative analysis will be employed to evaluate differences in claims across projects with varying durations. The study is expected to show that longer construction project durations may be associated with increased claim exposure because insured assets and activities remain at risk for extended periods. Shorter projects may have comparatively shorter periods of insurance exposure and consequently different claims experience. The findings may also indicate that project size, construction activities, equipment usage, site conditions, and environmental factors contribute to variations in claims associated with project duration. The study is expected to provide useful information for insurers, actuaries, construction companies, contractors, brokers, and project risk managers. Understanding the relationship between project duration and construction insurance claims can support more accurate risk assessment, premium determination, claims forecasting, reserve estimation, and policy structuring. It may also assist insurers in developing appropriate exposure measures for construction insurance portfolios. The study concludes that construction project duration is an important factor in assessing construction insurance claims because longer projects may expose insured activities and assets to construction risks for extended periods. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate project duration, construction characteristics, historical claims experience, and relevant exposure factors into actuarial and underwriting models. Appropriate statistical and actuarial techniques should be applied to improve claims estimation and support effective management of construction insurance risks.
