Effect of Demographic Ageing on Pension Liability Growth

Abstract

The study examines the effect of demographic ageing on pension liability growth, with emphasis on how changes in the age structure of a population influence the financial obligations of pension schemes. Demographic ageing occurs when the proportion of older persons increases relative to younger age groups, creating important implications for retirement systems and long-term pension financing. As life expectancy improves and the number of retirees increases, pension schemes may experience higher and more prolonged benefit obligations. Understanding these demographic changes is therefore essential for effective pension planning and actuarial decision-making. The study will investigate the relationship between demographic ageing and the growth of pension liabilities, focusing on factors such as increasing life expectancy, rising numbers of pensioners, declining mortality rates, retirement patterns, and changes in the working-age population. Particular attention will be given to how demographic shifts influence the duration and magnitude of pension payments. The study will also examine the extent to which changes in population age composition may increase the financial pressure placed on pension funds and pension providers. The study will consider key demographic and actuarial indicators, including old-age dependency ratios, population ageing rates, life expectancy, retirement age, pensioner population, mortality rates, and pension liability levels. It will assess how these indicators interact with pension obligations and the sustainability of pension schemes. The study will also consider the importance of actuarial assumptions in estimating future pension liabilities under changing demographic conditions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. It is therefore recommended that pension schemes incorporate current and projected demographic trends into actuarial valuation, funding strategies, and long-term pension planning. Regular review of mortality, longevity, retirement, and population-ageing assumptions is also recommended to ensure that pension liabilities are estimated accurately and that adequate resources are available to meet future retirement obligations.
