Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Protective Measures During Farm Fires

Abstract

Farm fires can cause significant damage to crops, livestock, farm buildings, machinery, equipment, stored produce, and other agricultural resources. Farmers may be exposed to fire risks during land preparation, crop residue burning, machinery operation, storage activities, and the use of combustible materials on farms. The adoption of appropriate protective measures can help reduce the likelihood and impact of farm fires. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to identify fire hazards, prevent fire outbreaks, and respond safely when fires occur. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of protective measures during farm fires. It will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended fire safety measures. The study will also determine the influence of training on farmers’ adoption of practices such as maintaining firebreaks, safe storage of combustible materials, proper handling of farm machinery, availability of fire extinguishing materials, safe disposal of burning residues, and emergency evacuation procedures. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ knowledge of farm fire risks, fire prevention practices, protective measures, firebreak maintenance, safe machinery operation, storage safety, fire extinguishing equipment, emergency response, and evacuation procedures. It will also assess farmers’ sources of fire safety information and determine the extent to which extension agents provide practical demonstrations and advisory support on preventing and managing farm fires. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of fire safety, and adoption of protective measures during farm fires. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of recommended protective measures. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of protective measures during farm fires. Farmers who receive regular and practical fire-safety training may demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of measures such as maintaining firebreaks, controlling sources of ignition, storing combustible materials safely, keeping basic fire-fighting equipment available, and following appropriate emergency procedures. However, the level of adoption may also depend on farmers’ access to safety equipment, farm resources, and relevant emergency information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, fire and emergency management authorities, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address farm fire prevention and emergency preparedness. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical fire-safety training and demonstrations that can improve farmers’ ability to prevent and respond to farm fires. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of protective measures during farm fires by increasing farmers’ knowledge of fire hazards, prevention practices, and emergency responses. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular practical training on farm fire prevention, promote the maintenance of firebreaks, encourage safe handling and storage of combustible materials, and educate farmers on appropriate emergency response procedures. These measures may reduce fire-related losses and improve safety on farms.
