Effect of Guaranteed Cash Values on Life Insurance Premium Requirements

Abstract

Guaranteed cash values are predetermined amounts that a life insurance policyholder is entitled to receive under specified contractual conditions, particularly when a policy is surrendered or reaches certain stages of its duration. These guaranteed values form part of the financial commitments of life insurance companies and may influence the level of premiums required to support future policy benefits and obligations. Their inclusion in life insurance contracts therefore has important implications for actuarial premium determination. This study examines the effect of guaranteed cash values on life insurance premium requirements. It will assess how variations in guaranteed cash value levels influence the amount of premium required to adequately finance life insurance benefits and contractual obligations. The study will also examine the relationship between guaranteed cash values, policy duration, benefit amounts, premium payments, interest assumptions, and mortality experience. The study will focus on actuarial factors including guaranteed cash value levels, policy duration, premium payment periods, mortality rates, interest rates, policy expenses, benefit amounts, and expected surrender values. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to estimate the present value of guaranteed cash benefits and determine the corresponding premium requirements under different contractual assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant life insurance policy data, including guaranteed cash values, premium payments, policy benefits, policy duration, mortality assumptions, interest rates, and expense information, will be obtained from appropriate insurance and actuarial sources. Actuarial present value calculations, comparative analysis, sensitivity analysis, descriptive statistics, and premium valuation techniques will be used to evaluate the effect of guaranteed cash values on life insurance premium requirements. The study is expected to find that variations in guaranteed cash values may have measurable effects on premium requirements. Higher guaranteed cash values may increase the expected future obligations of insurers and consequently require higher premiums to maintain adequate funding of policy benefits. The magnitude of the effect may depend on policy duration, policyholder age, mortality assumptions, interest rates, expenses, and the timing of cash value payments. The findings may be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, product developers, underwriters, and financial managers. Understanding the effect of guaranteed cash values on premium requirements can support more accurate premium calculations, product pricing, reserve estimation, liability management, and policy design. It may also assist insurers in balancing guaranteed policy benefits with the premiums required to maintain the financial sustainability of insurance contracts. The study concludes that guaranteed cash values are significant considerations in determining life insurance premium requirements. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate realistic guaranteed cash value assumptions into actuarial pricing and valuation models. Regular assessment of guaranteed benefits, mortality experience, interest rates, expenses, and policyholder behaviour may improve premium adequacy and strengthen the financial management of life insurance products.
