Effect of Policy Portfolio Age Structure on Life Insurance Liability Valuation

Abstract

Policy portfolio age structure refers to the distribution of life insurance policies or policyholders across different age groups within an insurance portfolio. Age composition is an important actuarial consideration because mortality and survival probabilities vary across different ages. Changes in the age structure of a life insurance portfolio can therefore influence the expected timing and amount of future benefit payments and consequently affect the valuation of insurance liabilities. This study will examine the effect of policy portfolio age structure on life insurance liability valuation. It will assess how variations in the distribution of policies across age groups influence the estimated value of future insurance obligations. The study will also examine the relationship between policyholder age structure, mortality assumptions, survival probabilities, policy duration, benefit amounts, and the resulting life insurance liability values. The study will focus on policy portfolio age structure, policyholder age groups, life insurance liabilities, mortality rates, survival probabilities, policy duration, benefit amounts, interest rates, expected benefit payments, and actuarial present values. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to estimate insurance liabilities under different portfolio age structures. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will also be used to evaluate changes in liability values resulting from variations in the age composition of the policy portfolio. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant life insurance policy, age, benefit, mortality, premium, duration, and interest rate data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, age distribution analysis, mortality analysis, actuarial present value calculations, cash flow projection, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative policy portfolio age structures will be evaluated to determine their influence on projected life insurance liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that policy portfolio age structure may have a significant effect on life insurance liability valuation. A portfolio containing a larger proportion of older policyholders may generate higher expected liabilities because mortality rates generally increase with age, while a portfolio with a greater concentration of younger policyholders may produce different liability patterns. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the distribution of policyholders across age groups, benefit amounts, policy duration, mortality assumptions, survival probabilities, and interest rates. The study will be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, underwriters, pricing analysts, portfolio managers, financial managers, and insurance valuation specialists. It may provide useful information for estimating insurance liabilities, reviewing mortality assumptions, assessing portfolio risk, projecting future benefit payments, and improving actuarial valuation practices. The findings may also assist insurers in monitoring demographic changes within their policy portfolios and assessing their implications for future financial obligations. The study concludes that policy portfolio age structure is an important consideration in life insurance liability valuation because changes in age composition can influence mortality experience and the timing and value of expected benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor the age distribution of their policy portfolios, incorporate appropriate age-specific mortality assumptions into liability models, and conduct sensitivity analysis to assess the effects of changes in portfolio age structure on life insurance liabilities.
