Effect of Policyholder Age Distribution on Life Insurance Premium Revenue
Abstract
Life insurance premium revenue is influenced by the demographic characteristics of policyholders, particularly their age distribution. Differences in the ages of policyholders can affect mortality expectations, policy duration, premium rates, renewal patterns, and the composition of insurance portfolios. Understanding the relationship between policyholder age distribution and premium revenue is therefore important for effective life insurance pricing, portfolio management, and revenue planning. The study examines the effect of policyholder age distribution on life insurance premium revenue. It will assess how the distribution of policyholders across different age groups influences the amount and stability of premium income generated by life insurance companies. The study will also examine variations in premium revenue associated with younger, middle-aged, and older policyholder groups and determine their relative contribution to overall premium income. The study will consider factors such as policyholder age, number of active policies, premium rates, policy duration, renewal frequency, policy type, and premium revenue. Statistical techniques including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis will be applied to examine the relationship between age distribution and premium revenue. Actuarial considerations relating to mortality expectations and policy duration will also be incorporated into the analysis. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical life insurance portfolio data containing information on policyholder ages, policy types, premium payments, policy duration, and premium revenue will be collected and analysed over a specified period. Descriptive statistics will be used to examine the distribution of policyholders across age groups, while correlation and regression techniques will be applied to determine the extent to which age distribution influences premium revenue. The study is expected to reveal variations in premium revenue across different policyholder age groups. Younger policyholders may contribute to longer-term premium revenue through extended policy durations and higher opportunities for continued premium payments, while older policyholders may generate different revenue patterns due to shorter expected policy durations and higher mortality-related considerations. The findings may also show that the overall age composition of a life insurance portfolio influences the stability and predictability of premium revenue. The findings are expected to be useful to life insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, financial managers, and portfolio managers. Understanding the effect of policyholder age distribution may assist insurers in developing appropriate pricing strategies, forecasting premium income, managing portfolio composition, and designing products that meet the needs of different age groups. The findings may also support better assessment of demographic changes within life insurance portfolios. The study concludes that policyholder age distribution is an important demographic factor that can influence life insurance premium revenue. It is therefore recommended that life insurers regularly analyse the age composition of their policyholders and incorporate demographic patterns into premium revenue forecasting and portfolio management. Continuous monitoring of age distribution may improve pricing decisions, revenue planning, portfolio balance, and the long-term sustainability of life insurance operations.
