Effect of Product Conversion Features on Life Insurance Contract Values

Abstract

Product conversion features are provisions in life insurance contracts that allow policyholders to change an existing insurance arrangement into another form of coverage without undergoing a completely new underwriting process. Such features may affect the financial structure of a policy by changing the benefit pattern, premium obligations, policy duration, and expected future liabilities. Their inclusion in life insurance products can therefore influence the actuarial value of insurance contracts. This study examines the effect of product conversion features on life insurance contract values. It will assess how conversion provisions influence the actuarial present value of future benefits and premiums associated with life insurance policies. The study will also examine the relationship between conversion options, policy duration, premium payments, benefit levels, and expected insurer liabilities. The study will focus on important actuarial factors associated with product conversion features, including conversion periods, policyholder age, remaining policy term, mortality assumptions, premium rates, benefit amounts, and interest rate assumptions. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to determine how changes in these factors may affect the value of life insurance contracts containing conversion provisions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant life insurance data and actuarial assumptions will be obtained from life tables, insurance policy records, and other appropriate actuarial sources. Actuarial present value calculations, sensitivity analysis, descriptive statistics, and comparative valuation techniques will be used to assess differences in contract values under alternative conversion feature assumptions. The study is expected to find that product conversion features may have measurable effects on life insurance contract values. Policies with broader or longer conversion opportunities may generate different expected benefit and premium cash flows compared with policies without such provisions. The findings may also show that changes in mortality, interest rates, policyholder age, and conversion timing can influence the financial value of conversion features. The study may provide useful information to actuaries, life insurance companies, product developers, underwriters, and financial managers. Understanding the effect of conversion features can support more accurate premium determination, liability estimation, product pricing, reserve assessment, and management of policyholder options. It may also assist insurers in designing products that appropriately reflect the financial implications of conversion rights. The study concludes that product conversion features are relevant considerations in the actuarial valuation of life insurance contracts. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate the expected financial effects of conversion provisions into product pricing, valuation, and liability management processes. Careful assessment of conversion behaviour and associated actuarial assumptions may improve the accuracy and reliability of life insurance contract valuation.
