Effect of Rainfall Measurement Frequencies on Weather Insurance Values

Abstract

Rainfall measurement frequency refers to how often rainfall observations are collected and recorded within a specified period. In weather insurance, rainfall measurements are important because they may be used to determine whether predefined weather conditions have been met for an insurance payout. The frequency of measurement can therefore influence the accuracy of rainfall assessment and the resulting value of weather insurance contracts and payouts. This study will examine the effect of rainfall measurement frequencies on weather insurance values. It will assess how different frequencies of rainfall observation influence the valuation of weather insurance contracts and the determination of potential payouts. The study will also compare insurance values under alternative rainfall measurement frequencies and determine how variations in measurement intervals affect the estimated financial exposure of insurers. The study will focus on rainfall measurement frequencies, weather insurance values, rainfall observations, weather insurance, precipitation levels, rainfall variability, insurance payouts, weather indexes, agricultural risk, index-based insurance, contract valuation, claim determination, and actuarial modelling. It is therefore recommended that insurers and relevant data providers regularly evaluate rainfall measurement practices, consider historical rainfall variability, and incorporate appropriate measurement assumptions into actuarial models to support accurate weather insurance valuation and effective agricultural risk management.
