Effect of Reinsurance Capacity on Insurance Underwriting
Abstract
The study examines the effect of reinsurance capacity on insurance underwriting, with emphasis on how the availability and adequacy of reinsurance protection influence insurers’ ability to assess, accept, and manage risks. Reinsurance capacity represents the amount of risk that reinsurers are willing and financially able to support through reinsurance arrangements. Adequate reinsurance capacity is important to insurers because it can increase their ability to accept large or complex risks while limiting the amount of exposure retained on their own balance sheets. The study will investigate the effect of reinsurance capacity on insurance underwriting decisions and performance. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between available reinsurance support, underwriting capacity, risk acceptance, policy limits, and the volume of business insurers are able to underwrite. The study will assess whether increased access to appropriate reinsurance capacity enables insurers to accept risks that may otherwise exceed their financial or risk-bearing capacity. The study will further examine how reinsurance capacity influences underwriting risk management, risk retention, portfolio composition, and claims exposure. Factors such as the financial strength of reinsurers, reinsurance limits, retention levels, claims experience, risk concentration, and the nature of insured risks will be considered. The study will also assess how limitations in reinsurance capacity may affect underwriting decisions, particularly for large, high-value, or highly exposed risks. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance and reinsurance data relating to underwriting volume, premiums, claims, reinsurance capacity, risk retention, and portfolio composition will be analysed using descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and appropriate actuarial and statistical techniques. Measures such as retention ratios, cession ratios, underwriting results, claims ratios, and changes in underwriting volume may be applied to assess the relationship between reinsurance capacity and underwriting outcomes. Regression or correlation analysis may also be used where appropriate. The study is expected to reveal that reinsurance capacity has a significant effect on insurance underwriting. Adequate reinsurance capacity is expected to increase insurers’ ability to accept larger risks, expand underwriting activities, and manage potential claims exposure. Conversely, limited reinsurance capacity may lead insurers to reduce policy limits, increase risk retention restrictions, or decline certain risks that exceed their available financial and reinsurance support. The study is further expected to establish that the effectiveness of reinsurance capacity in supporting underwriting depends on the availability of financially reliable reinsurers, appropriate reinsurance limits, suitable risk-sharing arrangements, and accurate assessment of underlying risks. Adequate reinsurance support may enable insurers to diversify their portfolios, improve risk management, and strengthen underwriting performance. The findings may also demonstrate the importance of aligning reinsurance capacity with the size, nature, and risk characteristics of an insurer’s portfolio. The study concludes that reinsurance capacity is an important determinant of effective insurance underwriting and risk management. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly assess their reinsurance capacity, establish appropriate relationships with financially strong reinsurers, review retention and cession levels, and align available reinsurance protection with their underwriting objectives and portfolio risk exposure to support sustainable underwriting growth.
