Effect of Shipping Route Characteristics on Marine Cargo Insurance Losses

Abstract

Marine cargo insurance provides financial protection against losses or damage to goods transported through maritime channels. The characteristics of shipping routes can influence the exposure of cargo to various risks during transit, including adverse weather conditions, port congestion, navigational hazards, piracy, accidents, and delays. Understanding the relationship between shipping route characteristics and marine cargo losses is therefore important for effective actuarial risk assessment and insurance pricing. This study examines the effect of shipping route characteristics on marine cargo insurance losses. It will investigate how differences in shipping routes influence the frequency and financial severity of insured cargo losses. The study will consider route-related characteristics and assess their implications for expected claims and the overall loss experience of marine cargo insurance portfolios. The study will focus on factors such as route length, voyage duration, weather exposure, navigational conditions, port characteristics, maritime traffic density, piracy exposure, accident frequency, cargo value, and transportation distance. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to analyse the relationship between these characteristics and marine cargo insurance losses. Particular attention will be given to how variations in route conditions may influence both the occurrence and magnitude of insured losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical marine cargo claims and relevant shipping route information will be analysed using actuarial and statistical methods. Descriptive statistics, probability models, regression analysis, loss distribution techniques, and comparative analysis will be employed to assess variations in insurance losses across different shipping route characteristics. The study is expected to show that shipping routes with longer voyage durations, greater exposure to adverse conditions, higher maritime traffic, or increased navigational hazards may be associated with higher marine cargo insurance losses. Routes with comparatively lower risk exposure may produce different claims patterns and loss levels. The findings may also indicate that cargo value, voyage duration, and the frequency of route-related incidents contribute to variations in claim severity. The study is expected to provide useful information for marine insurers, actuaries, shipping companies, cargo owners, brokers, and risk managers. Understanding how shipping route characteristics influence insurance losses can support more accurate risk classification, premium determination, claims forecasting, reserve estimation, and marine cargo portfolio management. It may also assist insurers in developing appropriate underwriting assumptions for different maritime transportation routes. The study concludes that shipping route characteristics are important considerations in assessing marine cargo insurance losses because differences in route conditions and exposure can influence the frequency and severity of insured claims. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate relevant route characteristics, historical claims experience, cargo values, and maritime risk indicators into actuarial and underwriting models. Appropriate statistical and actuarial techniques should be applied to improve loss estimation and support effective management of marine cargo insurance risks.
