Effect of Telematics-Based Risk Assessment on Motor Insurance Pricing
Abstract
The study examines the effect of telematics-based risk assessment on motor insurance pricing, focusing on how the use of vehicle and driver data collected through telematics technologies influences the determination of motor insurance premiums. Telematics systems can provide information on driving behaviour, vehicle usage, distance travelled, speed patterns, braking, and other risk-related characteristics. The availability of such information may enable insurers to move beyond traditional pricing approaches and develop premiums that more closely reflect individual driving risks. The study will investigate the effect of telematics-based risk assessment on motor insurance pricing by examining how telematics data influence risk classification, premium determination, and underwriting decisions. It will assess whether information obtained from vehicle tracking and driver behaviour monitoring can improve insurers’ ability to differentiate between higher- and lower-risk policyholders. The study will also consider the extent to which telematics-based pricing may influence premium fairness and accuracy. The study will further examine factors that may influence the effectiveness of telematics-based risk assessment in motor insurance pricing. Particular attention will be given to driving behaviour, frequency of vehicle use, distance travelled, speeding patterns, harsh braking, acceleration, and other measurable driving characteristics. The study will also consider data accuracy, privacy concerns, technological reliability, and policyholder acceptance as factors that may affect the application of telematics in insurance pricing. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant data on telematics usage, driving behaviour, claims experience, risk scores, and motor insurance premiums will be collected and analyzed. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression techniques may be employed to determine the relationship between telematics-based risk assessment and motor insurance pricing. Comparative analysis may also be used to examine differences in premiums among policyholders with different telematics-based risk profiles. The study is expected to reveal that telematics-based risk assessment has a significant effect on motor insurance pricing. Policyholders demonstrating safer driving patterns are expected to receive more favourable risk assessments and potentially lower premiums, while higher-risk driving behaviour may result in higher premium charges. The findings may also indicate that telematics data can improve the accuracy of risk classification by providing insurers with more detailed information about actual driving behaviour. The study is further expected to establish that telematics-based pricing can improve risk differentiation and support more personalized motor insurance premiums. The findings may assist insurers in developing usage-based or behaviour-based insurance products, improving underwriting decisions, and strengthening claims risk management. However, appropriate attention to data privacy, cybersecurity, transparency, and customer acceptance may be necessary to ensure effective and responsible use of telematics technology. The study concludes that telematics-based risk assessment has the potential to improve motor insurance pricing by providing more detailed and individualized information about driving risks. It is therefore recommended that insurers adopt reliable telematics technologies, establish appropriate data protection measures, and develop transparent pricing frameworks that clearly communicate how driving information affects premiums. These measures will help insurers improve risk assessment, promote fairer pricing, and strengthen the sustainability of motor insurance operations.
