Effect of Vehicle Safety Ratings on Motor Insurance Claim Frequency

Abstract

Vehicle safety ratings provide an important indication of the ability of vehicles to protect occupants and reduce the likelihood or severity of injuries during accidents. These ratings are generally based on assessments of vehicle design, crash protection, safety equipment, and other performance characteristics. In motor insurance, differences in vehicle safety characteristics may influence the frequency of claims because vehicles with stronger safety features may experience different patterns of accident-related insurance claims. This study will examine the effect of vehicle safety ratings on motor insurance claim frequency. It will assess whether differences in the safety ratings of insured vehicles are associated with variations in the number of claims reported during a specified period. The study will also examine how vehicle safety ratings can be incorporated into actuarial assessment of motor insurance risks and used to improve understanding of expected claim experience. The study will focus on vehicle safety ratings and selected indicators of motor insurance claim frequency. Factors such as crash-test performance, safety equipment, vehicle protection characteristics, and overall safety rating categories will be considered in relation to the occurrence of insurance claims. Statistical and actuarial techniques will be applied to determine whether vehicles with different safety ratings exhibit significant differences in claim frequency. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant motor insurance policy and claims data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression techniques, and appropriate frequency modelling methods. Vehicles may be grouped according to their safety rating categories, while claim frequency will be measured based on the number of reported claims relative to the applicable exposure period. The analysis will provide empirical evidence on the relationship between vehicle safety ratings and motor insurance claim frequency. The study is expected to reveal that vehicle safety ratings may be associated with differences in motor insurance claim frequency. Vehicles with higher safety ratings may demonstrate different claim patterns from vehicles with lower safety ratings, although the relationship may vary according to driving conditions, vehicle usage, and other characteristics of the insured risk. The findings may also show that incorporating safety ratings into actuarial models can provide additional information for evaluating motor insurance claim risks. The study will be useful to insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, vehicle owners, regulators, and researchers. It may assist insurers in improving risk classification and premium assessment by providing additional information about vehicle safety characteristics. The findings may also support insurers in developing more data-driven approaches to motor insurance underwriting and claims analysis. The study concludes that vehicle safety ratings can provide relevant information for understanding motor insurance claim frequency and may contribute to improved actuarial risk assessment. It is therefore recommended that insurers consider reliable vehicle safety information alongside other established rating factors when evaluating motor insurance risks and developing appropriate pricing and underwriting practices.
