Estimation of Pure Premiums Using Historical Claims Experience

Abstract

The study examines the estimation of pure premiums using historical claims experience, focusing on the use of past insurance losses to determine the expected cost of future claims. Pure premium represents the portion of an insurance premium required to cover expected losses before the inclusion of expenses, commissions, profit margins, and other loading factors. Accurate estimation of pure premiums is therefore an important aspect of actuarial pricing and insurance risk assessment. The study will investigate how historical claims experience can be used to estimate pure premiums for insurance policies. It will examine patterns in past claims frequency, claims severity, total losses, and exposure levels and assess their usefulness in predicting expected future losses. The study will also consider how historical claims information can provide a quantitative basis for establishing appropriate pure premium estimates. The analysis will focus on claims frequency, claims severity, exposure units, aggregate losses, average claim amounts, and historical loss ratios. Actuarial techniques and statistical methods will be applied to calculate expected losses per unit of exposure and derive pure premium estimates. The study will also examine variations in pure premium estimates across different periods or classes of insurance business. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Differences in claims frequency, severity, and exposure levels are expected to produce variations in estimated pure premiums across insurance portfolios. The findings may also indicate that the reliability and consistency of historical claims data have important implications for the accuracy of pure premium estimates. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurers, actuaries, underwriters, and insurance pricing analysts. Effective use of historical claims experience may support more accurate estimation of expected losses, improved premium adequacy assessment, and better actuarial pricing decisions. The study may also assist insurers in identifying changes in claims patterns that should be considered when developing future premium rates. The study concludes that historical claims experience provides an important actuarial basis for estimating pure premiums and evaluating expected insurance losses. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies maintain reliable claims and exposure records and regularly apply appropriate statistical and actuarial techniques to update pure premium estimates in line with observed claims experience.
