Forecasting Mortality Rates for Life Insurance Applications

Abstract

The study examines the forecasting of mortality rates for life insurance applications, focusing on the use of mortality forecasts to improve the estimation and management of future mortality risks. Mortality rates are fundamental to life insurance because they influence expected claims, premium determination, policy valuation, and the estimation of future liabilities. Since mortality patterns can change over time due to demographic and other population factors, relying solely on historical mortality experience may result in inaccurate assumptions. Forecasting future mortality rates can therefore provide insurers with useful information for making informed actuarial and financial decisions. The study focuses on the application of statistical and actuarial forecasting techniques to historical mortality data. Mortality observations across different ages and periods can be analysed to identify trends, patterns, and changes in survival experience. These patterns can then be used to develop forecasts of future mortality rates. The study considers how such forecasts can improve insurers’ understanding of future mortality risks and provide a stronger basis for evaluating the potential financial consequences of changing mortality conditions. The study further examines the relevance of mortality forecasting to life insurance pricing and product management. Accurate forecasts can assist insurers in estimating future claims and determining premiums that adequately reflect anticipated mortality risks. Forecasting may also support decisions relating to policy terms, benefit structures, reserves, and long-term insurance liabilities. The study therefore considers how reliable mortality projections can contribute to improved pricing decisions and effective management of life insurance portfolios. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical mortality data will be analysed using appropriate statistical and actuarial forecasting techniques to identify trends and project future mortality rates. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods will be employed to evaluate mortality patterns and assess the reliability of the resulting forecasts. Forecast accuracy will also be considered by comparing projected mortality rates with observed mortality experience where appropriate. The study is expected to find that mortality forecasting can provide useful estimates of future mortality patterns for life insurance applications. The findings are expected to demonstrate that appropriate forecasting techniques can identify important changes in mortality experience and provide estimates that support actuarial decision-making. The study may also reveal that the accuracy of mortality forecasts depends on the quality of historical data, the suitability of the forecasting model, and the ability of the model to account for changing mortality patterns. The study is further expected to establish that effective mortality forecasting can improve life insurance pricing, liability estimation, and risk management. Regular updating of mortality forecasts may enable insurers to respond to emerging demographic and mortality changes and reduce the potential for significant differences between expected and actual mortality experience. This may strengthen the financial planning and long-term sustainability of life insurance operations. The study concludes that forecasting mortality rates is an important component of life insurance applications because it provides a basis for anticipating future mortality risks and their potential financial implications. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuarial professionals adopt appropriate forecasting techniques and regularly update mortality projections using reliable and relevant data. Accurate mortality forecasting can support sound premium determination, improve liability estimation, strengthen risk management, and enhance the long-term financial stability of life insurance companies.
