Forecasting Survival Probabilities Using Actuarial Life Tables

Abstract

The study examines forecasting survival probabilities using actuarial life tables, with emphasis on the application of mortality and survival information in estimating the likelihood that individuals will survive to specific ages or over defined periods. Survival probabilities are fundamental to actuarial science because they provide important information for assessing future insurance and pension obligations. Actuarial life tables organize mortality experience into age-specific measures that enable actuaries to estimate survival patterns and make informed projections about future population and policyholder outcomes. The study will investigate how actuarial life tables can be used to forecast survival probabilities across different age groups and periods. It will examine the relationship between mortality rates, survival rates, number of survivors, age distribution, and life expectancy. Particular attention will be given to how historical mortality experience can be used to estimate future survival probabilities and identify changes in survival patterns over time. The study will consider important actuarial measures and techniques, including probability of death, probability of survival, mortality rates, life expectancy, survival functions, and life table analysis. Historical mortality data will be examined to establish patterns that can support survival forecasting. The study will also consider the influence of mortality improvements, changes in life expectancy, and differences in age-specific mortality on the reliability of survival probability forecasts. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. It is therefore recommended that actuarial practitioners regularly update life table assumptions using recent mortality experience and emerging longevity trends. Continuous monitoring of mortality changes and periodic evaluation of forecasting models are also recommended to improve the accuracy of survival probability estimates and strengthen long-term actuarial planning.
