Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Develop Personal Learning Portfolios
Abstract
Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities that enable adults to acquire knowledge, skills, competencies, and experiences for personal, social, and occupational development, while personal learning portfolios are organized collections of an individual’s learning experiences, acquired skills, completed activities, certificates, reflections, and other evidence of educational progress. The ability to develop a personal learning portfolio is increasingly important because it enables adults to organize evidence of their learning and monitor their educational development. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of how to systematically select, organize, and present evidence of their learning. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to develop personal learning portfolios. Adult Education exposes learners to activities that can strengthen their ability to organize, record, evaluate, and present information about their learning experiences. Through classroom activities, practical assignments, reflective exercises, skills development, and guided learning tasks, adults can acquire the organizational and reflective abilities required for portfolio development. Adult education programmes can also provide opportunities for learners to collect evidence of completed activities, document acquired competencies, and arrange their learning experiences in a structured manner. Personal learning portfolios provide adults with a systematic means of presenting evidence of their knowledge, skills, experiences, achievements, and educational progress. Developing such portfolios requires abilities in information selection, organization, record keeping, reflection, presentation, and continuous updating. Adults who participate in educational activities may become more capable of identifying significant learning experiences and organizing relevant evidence. Thus, Adult Education may contribute to improved portfolio development by providing learners with practical experiences and skills that support systematic documentation of learning. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in Adult Education and adults’ ability to develop personal learning portfolios. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a significant positive effect on adults’ ability to develop personal learning portfolios. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater competence in selecting relevant learning evidence, organizing educational records, documenting acquired skills, reflecting on learning experiences, and presenting their achievements systematically. The study may also show that practical portfolio-related activities within adult education programmes can improve learners’ confidence in managing their personal learning records. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the need to incorporate portfolio development activities into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may provide learners with practical guidance on collecting evidence, organizing learning materials, recording competencies, and reflecting on educational experiences. Portfolio-based activities can also encourage adults to take greater responsibility for monitoring their learning progress and identifying areas requiring further development. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, training institutions, educational administrators, employers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to organize and present evidence of their knowledge and skills, while adult educators may gain useful approaches for supporting continuous documentation of learning. Training institutions may also use the findings to strengthen learner assessment and achievement-recording practices, while employers may benefit from clearer evidence of applicants’ competencies and learning experiences. The study will recommend that adult education programmes integrate personal learning portfolio development into their teaching and learning activities. Adult educators should provide practical guidance on selecting, organizing, documenting, and updating evidence of learning achievements. Training institutions should also encourage learners to maintain portfolios throughout their educational experiences and provide appropriate resources for portfolio development. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can strengthen adults’ ability to develop personal learning portfolios and provide a structured means through which their knowledge, skills, experiences, and learning achievements can be demonstrated.
