Effect of Adult Education on Women’s Participation in Local Development Activities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development, while participation in local development activities refers to women’s involvement in projects and activities aimed at improving the conditions and well-being of their local communities. Women’s participation is important because their knowledge, experiences, skills, and contributions can support the planning and implementation of development initiatives. However, limited educational opportunities may affect women’s awareness, confidence, skills, and ability to contribute effectively to local development activities. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on women’s participation in local development activities. Adult education programmes provide women with opportunities to acquire literacy, communication, leadership, vocational, entrepreneurial, and problem-solving skills. Through classroom instruction, group discussions, practical activities, skills training, and community-based learning, women can acquire knowledge that may be applied to issues affecting their communities. These programmes can also expose women to opportunities for cooperation, information sharing, and collective action. Participation in local development activities involves women’s involvement in community projects, environmental activities, educational initiatives, infrastructure improvement efforts, social programmes, community meetings, and other activities designed to improve local living conditions. Effective participation requires awareness of community needs, communication skills, confidence, cooperation, and the ability to contribute ideas and practical solutions. Adult education may strengthen these abilities and encourage women to become more actively involved in local development efforts. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise women participating in selected adult education programmes within local communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure women’s exposure to adult education and their level of participation in local development activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on women’s participation in local development activities. Women who participate actively in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in community projects, development meetings, social initiatives, and other activities aimed at improving their communities. The study may also establish that knowledge and skills acquired through adult education improve women’s confidence and capacity to contribute to local development efforts. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to connect learning activities with practical community development issues. Group projects, problem-solving activities, leadership exercises, community discussions, and practical assignments can provide women with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills to local development challenges. The study will be significant to women learners, adult educators, community leaders, adult education programme coordinators, community development organizations, educational planners, and policymakers. Women may benefit from improved knowledge and skills that enable them to contribute more effectively to local development. Adult educators and programme coordinators may gain useful information for designing relevant programmes, while community leaders and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen adult education initiatives that encourage women’s involvement in local development. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities related to local development and community needs. Adult educators should encourage women to participate in group projects, community discussions, leadership activities, and problem-solving exercises that promote active involvement in development initiatives. The study concludes that effective adult education can strengthen women’s participation in local development activities and enhance their contribution to the social and economic improvement of their communities.
